[2004-05-20 11:25:31] - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40981-2004May19.html VA ends month with considerable budget surplus. I'm amused -dave

[2004-05-20 11:19:47] - vinnie: That works. I was trying "order by" before, to fix the problem, instead of "group by".... I got so confused why it didn't work - aaron

[2004-05-20 11:18:18] - try "select col, count(*) from table group by col" - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:17:53] - SELECT DISTINCT COL, COUNT(COL) FROM TABLE gives me the same error... I'll keep playing with it - aaron

[2004-05-20 11:17:47] - oh, nm, "group by" - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:15:52] - you need "distinct" in there somewhere - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:15:21] - you're counting everything, not frequencies - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:13:48] - I get a "Not A Single Group Function" error. I'm trying to get a table containing a column of data entries, and a column of how frequently each entry appears - aaron

[2004-05-20 11:13:10] - Sorry, I'm completely hijacking the topic. - pierce

[2004-05-20 11:12:51] - This is a really noob SQL question, but what's wrong with this statement? "SELECT COL, COUNT(COL) FROM TABLE" - aaron

[2004-05-20 11:12:50] - I like this entry for pro-kerry: http://www.designsonthewhitehouse.com/review/681-1085059221-front-thumb.jpg - pierce

[2004-05-20 11:09:13] - that's all I got - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:09:06] - http://www.nationaudio.com/News/DailyNation/110699/News/images/img1106e.jpg - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:08:55] - paul: she was trying to send the bird to paradise ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-20 11:08:14] - Vinnie: But to kill a bird? -Paul

[2004-05-20 11:07:58] - Aaron: Especially the "Rooaarr!!!" :-P -Paul

[2004-05-20 11:07:39] - http://images.usatoday.com/weather/photos/njtree07.jpg - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:06:27] - http://www.cgnetworks.com/stories/2003_02/harrypotter/whomping_willow_1.jpg - vinnie

[2004-05-20 11:05:53] - dave: That is pretty cute. - aaron

[2004-05-20 11:04:32] - paul: hehe yeah, gotta watch out for those trees -dave

[2004-05-20 11:02:13] - I never knew trees were so violent. -Paul

[2004-05-20 10:58:46] - what a fool I've been. that tree-dragon combo is so obvious! - vinnie

[2004-05-20 10:58:36] - Dave: yeah, I'm with vinnie.  And it was compounded by the fact that I didn't understand anyway. - pierce

[2004-05-20 10:58:16] - Dave: Oh, I get it, it's in reverse order. :-P -Paul

[2004-05-20 10:57:56] - ugh. I'm so used to reading things backwards that your correction confused me - vinnie

[2004-05-20 10:54:20] - ack, quite -dave

[2004-05-20 10:54:15] - Quiet amusing ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-20 10:53:59] - "I play a tree and a dragon. Rooaarr!!!" -dave

[2004-05-20 10:53:53] - "On turn 1, Angel?" -dave

[2004-05-20 10:53:47] - "Yup. Daddy's turn." -dave

[2004-05-20 10:53:41] - "Uh, okay. I play a forest and birdie. Your turn." -dave

[2004-05-20 10:53:34] - "My tree kills your birdie. Another tree. My other tree attacks, and kills you, Daddy." -dave

[2004-05-20 10:53:27] - "Yup, you won. Wanna play again?" -dave

[2004-05-20 10:53:13] - hehe, an account of an MTG player playing his 5 year old daughter. I'm gonna try to make it consecutive posts so it looks better ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-20 10:36:35] - all: thanks for your help! - Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:32:15] - well, congrats on getting your first kernel compiled and working. - mig

[2004-05-20 10:28:14] - this was my sequence:  make mrproper    make oldconfig    make dep    make bzImage    make modules    make modules_install    make install    -Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:27:22] - yeah, I think I did make bzImage last night, we wrestled with this for a good while at work yesterday -Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:25:54] - I think my problem was that I thought it was overwriting the old kernel when I rebooted, but it was keeping it and makiing a new option in the lilo.conf file-Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:25:27] - does make install rename bzImage to something else? - mig

[2004-05-20 10:25:17] - I restarted and it sees the new kernel now -Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:23:13] - what about make modules/make modules_install? - mig

[2004-05-20 10:21:29] - pierce:  make bzImage, then make install (so that should have put the boot image into the /boot directory).  i don't believe that creates an initrd image by default though . . . you probably need to tell lilo to not use an initrd image.  ~a

[2004-05-20 10:20:18] - a+Ricky: did you "make bzImage" after you compiled?  then, did you copy the image file into your /boot directory and modify lilo.conf to point to it? - pierce

[2004-05-20 10:20:05] - let me see if this new option comes up when I restart - Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:19:22] - ok, well in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/ should be a file called 'bzImage'.  you need to move that to /boot - mig

[2004-05-20 10:19:05] - I think I see it

[2004-05-20 10:18:23] - mig:  yes, he compiled the new kernel, but he hasn't rebooted into it (uname -a shows the old kernel).  also, he's going to use /sbin/modprobe to install a module after he reboots.  ~a

[2004-05-20 10:16:52] - you've compiled the new kernel, right? - mig

[2004-05-20 10:16:25] - well modifying lilo to point to the new kernel should get it to recognize that one. - mig

[2004-05-20 10:15:53] - it seems lilo wants a reference to an img file, where do I find that? -Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:13:34] - I am working on getting a new kernel to override an old one in mandrake, seems part of the system knows about the new one and part the old -Ricky

[2004-05-20 10:12:56] - what's the difference between pipes (named or otherwse) and sockets? Is it just that sockets are more created for communcation over a network and pipes are usually for inter-process communication on a single computer? -dave

[2004-05-20 10:12:32] - yeah (assuming lilo is in your path) - pierce

[2004-05-20 10:12:12] - so just type lilo at the terminal and it should do it?

[2004-05-20 10:11:46] - a: mig is right.  run /sbin/lilo (or whatever) again after modifying the file, but before you reboot. - pierce

[2004-05-20 10:10:07] - ~a: i think all you have to do is just run lilo again. - mig

[2004-05-20 10:07:54] - pierce:  when you modify lilo.conf, do you need to do anything else to get lilo to use that file?  (i haven't used lilo in years and ricky is asking)  ~a

[2004-05-20 09:27:47] - kris: not kim possible. although that show uses it a lot - vinnie

[2004-05-20 08:49:31] - kris:  if i had to guess.  i'd say somewhere else :-)  ~a

[2004-05-20 08:22:37] - Dave: Yeah, the Western conference is officially a lost cause for me now since I don't want any of the remaining teams to win. All my hopes lie with the Pacers now. -Paul

[2004-05-20 07:59:48] - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&ncid=757&e=2&u=/nm/20040519/od_nm/finger_dc "when we find a body part, we are required to call police." - mig

[2004-05-20 07:47:01] - the one I like is "I noticed during dinner, when we were talking about her ex-husband, she shredded her napkin into bits," Bill recalls. "It was a cloth napkin." -dave

[2004-05-20 07:46:43] - http://msn.match.com/msn/article.aspx?articleid=2248&TrackingID=516165&BannerID=541888 signs that your date has a dark side -dave

[2004-05-20 07:45:14] - vinnie: I was sad that the Lakers beat the Spurs, but at least they were good matchups and the Spurs won last year. -dave

[2004-05-20 07:44:24] - vinnie: yeah I know, but I can't bring myself to root for a team that beat the Kings :-/ -dave

[2004-05-20 00:46:27] - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040520/ap_on_re_us/anti_war_soldier&cid=519&ncid=1480 we have a volunteer army ...... right.... - mig

[2004-05-20 00:16:37] - is booyah from kim possible or did it come from somewhere else? -kris

[2004-05-20 00:09:55] - pierce:  nope.  ~a

[2004-05-20 00:07:04] - a: are you counting title changes? - pierce

[2004-05-20 00:06:37] - Awww, too bad.  Only ten or so posts short. :) - pierce

[2004-05-19 23:33:26] - dave: btw, that link you posted was hilarious! :) - vinnie

[2004-05-19 23:32:51] - the Lakers? pshhh. just root for Goliath, why don't ya? - vinnie

[2004-05-19 23:24:59] - vinnie: although amusingly enough, now I think I will root for the Lakers since the twolves kicked the King's out -dave

[2004-05-19 23:22:15] - vinnie: I will say that the King's didn't really deserve to be as close as they were at the end though. -dave

[2004-05-19 23:21:58] - vinnie: and the calls at the end so didn't go the King's way, which was unfortunate -dave

[2004-05-19 23:21:28] - vinnie: I love KG, but I like so many people on the Kings -dave

[2004-05-19 23:21:02] - vinnie: BOOOOO -dave

[2004-05-19 23:19:40] - Vinnie: Shut up! :'( -Paul

[2004-05-19 23:15:15] - that's addressed to anyone that wanted the kings to win - vinnie

[2004-05-19 23:14:50] - my timberwolves beat your kings! BOOYAH - vinnie

[2004-05-19 20:15:38] - mel: your job sounds much more important than mine :-/ - travis

[2004-05-19 20:00:11] - "i'd rather watch an antismoking commercial."  go to whydoyouthink.com and tell us what you'd rather do than smoke.  ~a

[2004-05-19 18:33:19] - haha, have to post this before I go though. People scamming a scammer. Download the PDF to read the account of what happened http://easynetworknyc.com/powerbook/ -dave

[2004-05-19 18:32:06] - a: srry -dave

[2004-05-19 18:31:59] - mel: I do gotta go though, so have fun ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 18:31:31] - mel: hehe, yeah, you gotta love it when they drop something in your lap at the last minute ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 18:18:00] - dave: ok, I think you're gone.  later!  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:16:00] - a: well it still might get hit later tonight  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:16:00] - that and someone just came by with some changes that they'd like done by the end of the day.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:16:00] - dave: nah, you definitely weren't keeping me.  Its just that my guilt level increases with time.  :-)  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:14:00] - awww, you guys were so close.  35 more posts to make today the biggest posting day in history.  ~a

[2004-05-19 18:14:00] - -dave

[2004-05-19 18:14:00] - mel: hehe, sorry to have kept you. Have fun ^_^ -dae

[2004-05-19 18:14:00] - dave, I better go do some work.  Have a good night.  :-)  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:13:00] - which doesn't really count as obvious.  :-P  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:12:00] - mel: yeah, it's very humbling to learn about things that other people have come up with, it's like, that's so cool, and no way in heck would I have ever come up with that -dave

[2004-05-19 18:12:00] - dave: yes, exactly.  so many things seem obvious but only after someone explains it to me.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:11:00] - there are so many simple ideas that I never would have though of.  Kinda goes back (unintentionally) to my statement that simple ideas and the guts ti implement them will take you a long way.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:11:00] - mel: I took this testing and verification class, and the prof would be like, so, this stuff I've taught you today took this guy 3 years to figure out for his phd -dave

[2004-05-19 18:10:00] - mel: yeah, so many solutions to things seem so simple, but having to come up with it is a huge pain -dave

[2004-05-19 18:10:00] - yeah, I love C.  :-D  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:10:00] - thought if it.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:10:00] - the funny thing is that one good strategy for eliminating so of the atmosphere issues is taking a measurement from a quasar (with known position, we assume) and then another measurement of the spacecraft signal.  You can relate the two measurements to each other and a lot of atmosphere terms drop out.  kind of simple, again, but I wouldn't have

[2004-05-19 18:08:00] - mel: hehe, most of the code was written already. I just made minor mods. Ugh, assembly so stinks. I keep trying to get my boss to jump onto the C bandwagon, but he doesn't know it too well, so he likes to stick with assembly -dave

[2004-05-19 18:07:00] - dave: yup, I program in C.  you program in assembly?  Thats hard core.  :-)  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:07:00] - the funny thing about the signal processing involved in receiving spacecarft signals is that the biggest problem is the atmosphere.  Which is such an obvious problem so it seems simple but actually ends up being horribly complicated.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:06:00] - mel: ooooo, sounds interesting. You program in C? Most of our code is in assembly unfortunately. It's going to be a huge pain to retool the thing in C, which definitely needs to be done -dave

[2004-05-19 18:05:00] - mel: yeah, about the growth. What's really stupid is all the short-sightedness it causes. You'd think the investors would understand the need for longterm decisions -dave

[2004-05-19 18:05:00] - Re the fast food chain:  that is so cool.  seriously, simple ideas and the guts to implement them will take you a long way.  I can think of so many small business examples.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:04:00] - I work on a VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometer) Receiver that  uses DSP to receive and decode spacecraft signals.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:03:00] - the other problem I have with our public company system is the overemphasis on growth.  Why do companies get nailed in the stock market if they can't continue to grow at outrageous rates?  It doesn't seem realistic to expect indefinite infinite growth.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:02:00] - mel: HEHE, and do you like the work so far? What DSP are you using? -dave

[2004-05-19 18:01:00] - mel: some relatives of mine own a fast food restaurant chain, and they had this interior designer come into their place. He sketched out his thoughts on a napkin and they paid him like 4-5k. They made the changes and their business like doubled -dave

[2004-05-19 18:01:00] - dave: I know!  At first when I took the job I was somewhat scared but common sense and hard work can take you a long way.  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:00:00] - dave: my boss got me to take this job by pitching me with the DSP learning and experience I would get.  :-)  -mel

[2004-05-19 18:00:00] - mel: yeah, it can be pretty amazing what some stuff can do (that you normally wouldn't think of) -dave

[2004-05-19 18:00:00] - dave: wow, neat.  sounds like a good job if you get to do interesting stuff.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:59:00] - dave: There is a lot of pleasure in the instant gratification of seeing how changes you make affect the business.  Just simple things matter a lot.  over 3 years sales increased by 100% and most of it was driven by very simple changes (menu changes, improved service, spcial events to draw new customers) and hard work (consistent schedule, etc) -mel

[2004-05-19 17:57:00] - mel: at work. The project was already a good deal on its way when I joined, but I've gotten to do some interesting stuff -dave

[2004-05-19 17:56:00] - mel: mmmmm food. Definitely seems exciting to try to get a store to do better, tho I wouldn't know the first thing about it -dave

[2004-05-19 17:55:00] - dave: ooh.  cool.  at work or ojn your own time?? that sounds neat..  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:55:00] - I was the manager of a coffeeshop for 3 years and for those 3 years my life to some degree revolved around working to get the little business to perform better.  it was definitely one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.  So food service has a special place in my heart.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:54:00] - mel: oooo, the project I'm currently working on is a DSP motor driver solution -dave

[2004-05-19 17:53:00] - dave: probably something related to digital signal processing.  or maybe something in the food industry.  :-)  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:52:00] - mel: oooo, what kinda business? -dave

[2004-05-19 17:52:00] - dave: well before I had blind faith.  the courses gave me more information, and once I started thinking about the stock market and the relationship between financial performance and stock price, I lost hope.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:51:00] - I used to think I wanted to be the ceo of a fortune 500 company one day.  but I changed my mind.  I don't want to be involved in public stock offerings.  My new dream to open my own small business.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:51:00] - mel: HEHE, the courses convinced you of that? Seems like they would have tried to advocate it some, or make it sound more logical ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:50:00] - dave: I know!  I took a bunch of economic course in college.  and they convinced me that the whole stock market concept is crazy.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:49:00] - hehe, I'm checking my mutual fund right now...  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:49:00] - mel: yeah, it's kinda amusing and frustrating to see how much the stock market is driven by seemingly whimsical things -dave

[2004-05-19 17:48:00] - ok cool.  When I worked at intel everyone was always talking about Intel stock.  I always knew the price on a given day without even trying.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:48:00] - mel: kinda fun to see how much you make or lose in a given day. Also can be kinda stinky to see how much you lose -dave

[2004-05-19 17:48:00] - mel: hehe no you don't really need to pay attention. I just amuse myself by checking them every day. -dave

[2004-05-19 17:47:00] - cool.  me too, but I don't really pay too much attention to them yet because I plan on holding on to them for awhile.  should I pay more attention?  This is my first time owning mutual funds (or anything similar).  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:46:00] - mel: mutual funds -dave

[2004-05-19 17:46:00] - mel: hehe, us engineers aren't very imaginative ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:46:00] - ah.  do you own stock?  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:45:00] - gah, curse the market. It was up all day and it ended 30 points down :-( -dave

[2004-05-19 17:45:00] - very high speed IC hardware description language.  in general I think very sounds dumb in an acronym.  very is such an overused word.  I would try to find a better adjective.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:43:00] - paul: <waving> -dave

[2004-05-19 17:43:00] - mel: hehe, another one that seems to go hand in hand with VLSI is VHDL -dave

[2004-05-19 17:43:00] - bye paul  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:43:00] - *Snore* This engineering talk is boring me. I'm out of here. :-P Bye all. -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:43:00] - dave: I haven't heard, but that would seem like the next logical extention.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:42:00] - paul: well, she's quite old, a grandmother -dave

[2004-05-19 17:42:00] - mel: Yeah, and didn't they end up tacking on more to VLSI, like EXTRA very large, etc? -dave

[2004-05-19 17:42:00] - it should be some longer, more scientific word.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:41:00] - Dave: So she's ugly. :-D -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:41:00] - another good one is VLSI.  Very Large Scale Integration.  Very Large sounds kind of dumb.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:41:00] - mel: HEHE, yeah, pretty funny. I can't think of any others that have massively in them ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:40:00] - dave: gotcha.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:40:00] - paul: she's married actually. And I've offered to meet her coupla times, but she kinda wants me to keep my current perception of her and not change it through physically meeting her. -dave

[2004-05-19 17:40:00] - dave: massively?  I always think its funny when an acronym includes a word like massively.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:39:00] - mel: common examples being Everquest, Asheron's Call, Ultima Online ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:38:00] - mel: massively multiplayer online role playing game. Whew! mouthful -dave

[2004-05-19 17:37:00] - so what does mmorpg stand for?  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:37:00] - Dave: So clearly it's a date. Taking her to a BBQ place or a 5 star restaurant? -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:37:00] - dave: haha.  excellent point,  I think you're right.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:37:00] - Dave: :'( -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:37:00] - paul: ahhh, no. Although I met her through an mmorpg. Work is a little too busy for her to play much these days. And she doesn't like the mmorpg I'm playing so much -dave

[2004-05-19 17:36:00] - Paul: not because I'm laughing at you.  Mostly I try to figure out where you are coming from and how it makes sense.  Because it does always make sense, but in some fundementally different way than how I perceive things.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:36:00] - paul: isn't it more that they laugh at you because you amuse them? ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:36:00] - Dave: I was asking if you are waiting for her to play an MMORPG. -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:36:00] - Mel: I get the most work done early in the morning typically. You laugh at me too? :-( -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:35:00] - mel: HEHE, yeah, could definitely understand that ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:35:00] - Paul: you amuse me too.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:35:00] - paul: what about mmorpg? -dave

[2004-05-19 17:34:00] - dave:  ah, ok cool.  You know, I definitely get the most work done after 2 PM PST.  :-P  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:34:00] - Dave: I amuse everybody because they always laugh at me. :'( -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:34:00] - MMORPG? -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:34:00] - paul: You amuse everyone ^_^ I only hope I can be as amusing as you some day ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:34:00] - mel: I'm already home actually, waiting for a friend to get online. I was told to wait for a message after she got home from work. -dave

[2004-05-19 17:33:00] - I'll be out of here in ten minutes or so too. -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:33:00] - Vinnie: Funny? Do I amuse you? -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:33:00] - hmm, is everyone leaving now?  I'll have to rent the movie.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - pierce: bye bye ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - And with that... /me leaves. - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - paul: I think Paul is funny - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - vinnie: <waving> -dave

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - Vinnie: Bye, Vinnie. -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - Dave: No, it's not that at all. It was the fact that it was specifically a government job. Because government jobs are known for being great pay and benefits for lazy bums. :-P -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - i'm out of here too. bye all - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:32:00] - Mel: meh.  Good people in it, okay movie. - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:31:00] - pierce: bye Pierce.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:31:00] - Pierce: Bye, Pierce. -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:31:00] - I didn't hear about the movie.  was it good?  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:31:00] - All right guys, I'm out of here.  Have a good night. - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:31:00] - paul: Interesting. You don't think the economic possibilities are the primary reason people want to come to the US? -dave

[2004-05-19 17:30:00] - Paul: or more ironically, to get jobs with INS. - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:30:00] - Mel: I know, I know. It makes sense. I just thought it was funny. I imagine all these immigrants clamoring to get US citizenship so they can get some job at the Post Office or something. :-) -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:30:00] - worst name for a movie ever.  didn't they eat at the restaurant? - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:30:00] - pierce: haha.  well I'll take you to In & Out if you ever in the LA area.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:30:00] - paul: yeah, even if the company doesn't work directly for the govt, pretty good chance that they do work for someone who does work for someone who works for the govt -dave

[2004-05-19 17:29:00] - worst name for restaurant ever. didn't they see the movie? :) I would like to try it sometime, only heard legends of the chain - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:29:00] - paul: it is extremely difficult to get a job without us residency or citizenship.  any job.  not just a government job.  The H1 visa quota for this year was full in feb.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:28:00] - mel: hmmm, classy was poor choice of words, I think I meant like extremely expensive places ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:28:00] - Mel: go ahead, rub it in that none of us have access to In & Out Burger - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:28:00] - mel: whew! I applaud your choice in restaurants. I have a friend who only likes really classy places, it really makes it a burden when you want to do stuff with her -dave

[2004-05-19 17:28:00] - Yeah, I guess you're right.  I thought parens worked. - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:28:00] - pierce: ?  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:28:00] - (:-P) - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:27:00] - Paul:  well I am grateful to have my job.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:26:00] - pierce: has to be separated by spaces - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:26:00] - pierce: wait....I don't have to think about anything! HEHE -dave

[2004-05-19 17:26:00] - dave:  I like bbqs actually.  :-P  No 5 star restaurants, my favorite place to eat ever is In & Out.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:26:00] - Mel: HAHAHA. I like how the first benefit of being a US citizen was that you get to work for the government. :-P -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:26:00] - pierce: oooohhh, good point. I'll have to think about that one -dave

[2004-05-19 17:25:00] - Whoa, inside quotes the smilie wasn't interpreted... what gives? - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:25:00] - Dave: what if they eat barbecue at five-star restaurants? - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:25:00] - dave: yeah, us citizenship is extremely valuable.  Its crazy how much easier it makes my life.  It makes it possible for me to work for the govenment, and my extention, to live where I want to live and do what i want to do.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:25:00] - ":-P" - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:25:00] - Wasn't that the whole point? What am I missing here? -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:25:00] - "Mel:" - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:25:00] - paul: She's not interested in guys who have barbecues. Only guys who eat at 5 star restaurants ^_^ -dave

[2004-05-19 17:24:00] - "BBQ" - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:24:00] - "interested" - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:23:00] - paul: riiight...  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:23:00] - vinnie: yes, it really is.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:23:00] - paul: I agree, it makes it much harder when they want a career as well -dave

[2004-05-19 17:23:00] - Mel: What are you talking about? You had an entire BBQ party interested in you. :-P -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:23:00] - mel: wow, it really is creepy how that kind of news spreads - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:22:00] - pierce: yes.  thats definitely part of the appeal.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:22:00] - mel: yeah, I know several people who went back to their "original" country and got wives, because everyone wants to come over to the US. Even know one person who divorced her current husband and married the US citizen so that her kid could come over -dave

[2004-05-19 17:22:00] - lol, at batteries. exactly my point - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:22:00] - Mel: is your dad a U.S. citizen? - pierce

[2004-05-19 17:22:00] - vinnie: but its still funny that my dad gets so much attention.  Definitely way more than me.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:21:00] - i'm sorry, but high-powered anyone makes me laugh. what a dumb phrase - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:21:00] - Dave: True enough. But I think a lot of women think they can have their cake and eat it too. They want their professional career AND a family, and they are finding out that it's not so easy to excel at both. -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:21:00] - vinnie: I have a related story actually.  My dad is single and 69.  He is originally from Peru.  But he has only been to Peru once in the last 22 years.  Well words has spread "like wildfire"  :-)  that he is single and he constantly gets calls, letters, and e-mails from women in Peru who are interested.  Part of it is that he lives in the US. -mel

[2004-05-19 17:21:00] - I like high-powered women... until the batteries die.

[2004-05-19 17:21:00] - paul: you'd be surprised. Course the people that I'm thinking of are fairly picky as well -dave

[2004-05-19 17:20:00] - paul: the other problem is that since they are high-powered, the pool of men that they would want to marry is drastically reduced -dave

[2004-05-19 17:20:00] - Dave: I imagine those women can find men fairly easily though. -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:20:00] - Mel: Well, it's becoming common knowledge that a lot of the high powered businesswomen are bemoaning the lack of good men because they waited too long to look for a husband. -paul

[2004-05-19 17:19:00] - paul: a good number don't want careers. They just want to get married and settle down -dave

[2004-05-19 17:18:00] - paul:  haha!!  nice tie in to your general philosophy about women.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:18:00] - vinnie: yeah, I could see kind of creepy.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:18:00] - Dave: My guess is it takes them a couple of years where they are too busy establishing their careers before they get "frantic". -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:18:00] - vinnie:  "like wildfire"  cool.  I can't imagine.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:17:00] - it's kind of creepy, is what it is - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:17:00] - paul: you'd be surprised at how many females start getting a little frantic after they graduate. -dave

[2004-05-19 17:16:00] - Dave: I'm so glad that my parents seemed to have given up on me ever getting a girlfriend. :-) -paul

[2004-05-19 17:16:00] - vinnie: wow.  words has spread??  thats kind if cool.  -mel

[2004-05-19 17:16:00] - dave: not really traditional, but connected to the community. I was mostly joking about attending of those things anyway :) - vinnie

[2004-05-19 17:15:00] - Mel: So they expected you to suddenly be interested in a relationship because you had graduated? :-P -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:15:00] - vinnie: I empathize, my parents have tried to set me up with children of family friends. What's worse is when the parents come over for something, and then try to advertise their kid to you -dave

[2004-05-19 17:15:00] - Vinnie: Sweet. I imagine a handsome, college educated engineer like yourself probably fetches a pretty large number of cows from the ladies. :-) -Paul

[2004-05-19 17:15:00] - paul: well all of our previous interactions were school based and now we have all graduated.  -mel
