[2007-10-30 10:06:25] - xpovos:  you should trust people.  ~a

[2007-10-30 10:05:40] - ummm.  what's the alternative?  (if our goal is to get to a closer balance than we have now)  ~a

[2007-10-30 10:04:53] - in communist russia, wealth balances you.  ~a

[2007-10-30 09:17:24] - Corruption is a part of human nature and the bigger the possible gain, the more it's going to happen. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-30 09:16:47] - Too extreme?  Historical example #5 single payer health care system in the UK.  How long did the Queen Mother need to wait for her medical procedure? -- Xpovos

[2007-10-30 09:15:52] - Historical example #1: Communist Russia.  Historical example #2: Communist and modern day China.  Historical example #3: Modern day North Korea.  Historical example #4: Cuba, post Castro's revolution. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-30 09:14:23] - there will continue to be bandits in gov't and they will thrive. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-30 09:14:09] - a: I would argue that it's not a re-balancing but a re-distribution.  Your terminology implies either a current or future balance, neither of which I perceive.  Nor am I in favor of.  On the point, though, If you have to ship all your goods through one pass, that's where the bandits will camp out.  Similarly if all our money goes to the gov't before coming back to us...

[2007-10-30 08:42:45] - he's talking about re-balancing wealth.  won't that disrupt the imbalance of power instead of create an imbalance as you suggest?  ~a

[2007-10-30 08:39:52] - a: Any sufficiently large pot of money attracts corruption, as does any positition with sufficient power.  Edwards is talking about creating a whole lot of new positions with power and taking a whole lot more money into a big pot.  Even if I trusted people [I don't] the whole thing is bound to be inefficient.  So, basically, I'm not a socialist. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-30 08:09:20] - xpovos:  what's wrong with a new deal?  ~a

[2007-10-29 23:28:39] - additionally, deletion debates are usually very hard to close so it'll often go a few extra days before an admin has time to close it.  ~a

[2007-10-29 12:32:18] - aaron:  the DRV hasn't been closed yet.  "[DRV] normally lasts for five days, sometimes extended for up to ten if the outcome is unclear."  it's only been three days!  :)  ~a

[2007-10-29 11:42:41] - a: where is the rickroll article :[ nothing has happened to it - aaron

[2007-10-29 08:22:58] - http://www.concordmonitor.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071026/FRONTPAGE/710260384 At least he's honest.  -- Xpovos

[2007-10-28 11:27:21] - "About one-third of people believe [in] ghosts.  And nearly one out of four, 23 percent, say they've actually seen a ghost or felt its presence....  Misty Conrad, her daughter, Arial Conrad and son Taylor Conrad fled their house because weird things happened." (cnn.  poll by the ap)  ~a

[2007-10-27 16:36:33] - no, only an admin can unprotect a page.  and usually admins are the ones that close AFD and DRVs  ~a

[2007-10-27 14:32:22] - a: do i need to take any action with the rickroll page? do they want me to create the redirect? - aaron

[2007-10-27 10:17:34] - i'll also admit i wasn't trying to sync it up on the weekdays.  ~a

[2007-10-27 10:15:49] - i came up with this idea first.  mine was a 30 hour day though.  ~a

[2007-10-26 17:09:24] - vinnie: what album is that? - aaron

[2007-10-26 11:25:08] - a: The common refrain is that up is up and down is up.  Generally phrased as "Good news is good news and bad news is good news." -- Xpovos

[2007-10-26 11:24:35] - Paul: Future guidance.  Way up.  Analysts expected something like a quarter per share next quarter.  CFC says it might even get $0.75 per share.  So ignore our dollar and a half shortfall this quarter.  -- Xpovos

[2007-10-26 10:46:39] - paul:  this is the stock market.  up is down and down is up.  ~a

[2007-10-26 10:30:44] - aaron: weird. I own an album that she sings on, didn't know she was Kelley Polar's sister - vinnie

[2007-10-26 10:29:54] - xpovos: I'm confused. CFC posts larger than expected losses and goes up 15%? -Paul

[2007-10-26 09:25:08] - aaron:  ignore my comment because i obviously didn't read yours (i never read your last sentence apparently)  ~a

[2007-10-26 08:50:41] - aaron:  no, that's deletion review (DRV).  deletion review is like "undelete".  but you are correct.  if you check the log it has been speedied a bunch of times.  ~a

[2007-10-25 23:10:42] - vinnie: weird coincedence... this random electronic musician who I learned about 6 months ago when my coworker was typing random words into Pandora is Kelley Polar's brother. Yay wikipedia! - aaron

[2007-10-25 23:07:31] - a: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2007_October_26 Rickroll's been deleted a lot of times. I'm appealing here to have it recreated. - aaron

[2007-10-25 22:54:21] - pierce: angel's food cake is delicious. you are gross - aaron

[2007-10-25 17:51:39] - title: gross. - pierce

[2007-10-25 16:59:54] - vinnie: the 24 producers couldn't have hoped for a more glowing review. - pierce

[2007-10-25 16:39:36] - also, I was right about the rickrolling being more entertaining (but it was close) - vinnie

[2007-10-25 16:39:04] - a: nooooooooo! it's notable, dammit! how will future generations learn? - vinnie

[2007-10-25 16:32:06] - vinnie:  Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rickroll  :(  ~a

[2007-10-25 16:27:09] - haha I just got rickrolled with the prospect of "24 season 7 trailer". I think that was probably more entertaining than the trailer will be - vinnie

[2007-10-25 16:24:18] - a: yeah sounds good - vinnie

[2007-10-25 15:35:39] - pierce:  it's eastern time.  ~a

[2007-10-25 15:22:57] - ddrsfm545yes?  ~a

[2007-10-24 18:06:20] - the lock in key security thing was pretty good too.  ~a

[2007-10-24 18:02:37] - yeah i saw that.  i couldn't stop laughing.  :-D  ~a

[2007-10-24 17:57:49] - http://worsethanfailure.com/Articles/A-Medical-Emergency.aspx where are you experiencing blue colored lips? - aaron

[2007-10-24 17:37:45] - a: I don't remember exactly, but i think they were all just mirrors of that 7up article - aaron

[2007-10-24 16:52:30] - aaron:  what were they hits to?  ~a

[2007-10-24 16:50:16] - a: i don't know, i was amazed when you told me there was only one hit. i googled it with Miguel about a week-and-a-half ago and there were at least 200 times that many - aaron

[2007-10-24 16:47:09] - i didn't know google used mysql.  man, now somebody tell me that google uses php and apache (lamp).  ~a

[2007-10-24 15:14:58] - a: Heh, I didn't even think of the chemical side of it.  I guess my science brain just turns off when I do finance. Chloro-floro carbon products for everyone.  Go-go air conditioning. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-24 15:14:05] - a: They'll get hammered again tomorrow.  They're announcing quarterly results.  FYI, I bought them a while back at $17.15 and sold 10 days later after the spike due to the Fed rate cut.    It was planned, and I knew not to hold, 'cause CFC is a sinking ship.  But I might buy again tomorrow afternoon and see if I can time another bounce. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-24 13:51:42] - aaron: every word in that slogan is as important as the last. maybe more important - vinnie

[2007-10-24 13:43:19] - xpovos:  god, CFC is a horrible ticker symbol!  . . . well i still own SNDK, they went down about the same % so far.  in fact, CFC almost got back up to even earlier today.  ~a

[2007-10-24 13:34:00] - aaron:  where did the 250 hits go?  were they all wikipedia mirrors?  i doubt that because wikipedia mirrors don't usually update themselves that quickly.  ~a

[2007-10-24 12:35:02] - a: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=7_Up&diff=164818165&oldid=164564998 - aaron

[2007-10-24 12:34:37] - a: that was like a week ago - aaron

[2007-10-24 12:34:27] - a: when i googled it, there were like 250 hits.... - aaron

[2007-10-24 12:24:03] - Ow, am I glad I sold my Countrywide(CFC) stock. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-24 06:52:10] - aaron:  did you see that there was one hit on google?  ~a

[2007-10-23 18:06:40] - a: that slogan was up there for waaay too long. someone even added a "slogans" section during that interim period, and naively added the bogus slogan to the section! - aaron

[2007-10-23 17:10:45] - a jack can contain two jiggers, and each jigger is two mouthfuls... I don't think we're talking about units of measurement anymore. - pierce

[2007-10-23 17:09:45] - aaron:  i found where the "7 up and 7 down" title came from :-P  ~a

[2007-10-23 16:45:09] - butt pipe.  snicker.  ~a

[2007-10-23 16:33:29] - a: butt OR pipe. choose your own naughty word - vinnie

[2007-10-23 15:30:39] - a butt?!  ~a

[2007-10-23 15:23:35] - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_unit#general -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 15:21:37] - Regardless, the whole situation is silly, because a pint of water is actually rarely a pound (lb) due to factors like temperature (as you mentioned) and barometric pressure.  However, most rules of thumb and generalities like that are frequently untrue when taken to specifics like this. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 15:17:20] - a: And no, your formula is fine.  However the formula I stated comes into play because you started talking about changing a new variable (temperature) as an effort to change the density. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 15:15:57] - a: That was supposed to be an alpha.  It died.  It represents 'proportional'. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 13:30:30] - á?  ~a

[2007-10-23 13:30:03] - right.  that's a completely different equation.  doesn't "density = mass / volume" still apply regardless of the pressure?  or is there some caveat to "desity = mass / volume" that i don't know about?  ~a

[2007-10-23 13:26:44] - a: so since R is a constant and we're dealing with a constant amount of substance: PVáT.  If we hold the volume and mass constant and raise the temperature, pressure increases. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 13:09:26] - a: PV=nRT -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 12:40:41] - xpovos:  wait i thought density = mass / volume.  so how does pressure come into play in that equation?  ~a

[2007-10-23 12:38:46] - whoa.  there's 15 kinds of ice?  ~a

[2007-10-23 12:35:39] - mmmmph.  water doesn't compress very easily, right?  ~a

[2007-10-23 12:34:42] - a: Or the pressure increases.  Take your pick. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 12:31:03] - xpovos:  ummmm.  when the density changes, so does the weight (and mass) if you're keeping the volume constant. (1 pint in our case)  ~a

[2007-10-23 12:25:54] - a: Actually, it is.  Weight doesn't change with temperature (unless you factor in relativistic effects).  It just becomes more or less dense.  In water's case, just less dense because both ice and steam expand. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 12:08:49] - xpovos:  oh, i guess a pint of water at boiling temp is about a pound, my bad.  ~a

[2007-10-23 12:06:51] - http://www.sciencesavvy.net/sui.gif how to commit suicide - the cool way - aaron

[2007-10-23 12:06:38] - xpovos:  a pint never weighs a pound . . . unless it's like half frozen or something.  a pint of water at freezing temperature is heaver than a pound and a "pint" of ice is lighter than a pound.  ~a

[2007-10-23 11:38:50] - a: A pint's a pound the world 'round. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-23 09:59:44] - 2 liters of water weighs 2 kg.  man, that's heavy.  ~a

[2007-10-23 08:32:21] - >:o  ~a

[2007-10-23 08:31:13] - a: are you going to update your information on plaxo? - aaron

[2007-10-23 08:04:10] - Paul: The comments on that article are interesting too.  And not one Chuck Norris joke. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-22 16:44:07] - kaleb:  spam filters get overworked though.  i hate that spam filters take up so much cpu and memory.  ~a

[2007-10-22 16:39:00] - a: Keeping an e-mail address private and/or uncapturable by spiders works well, but it only works for so long. Rather than changing my e-mail address, I just up the ante on spam filters (and white/blacklists). I'm at 4 years with my current address. - Kaleb

[2007-10-22 16:30:21] - oh, that dewey and his hijinx. - pierce

[2007-10-22 15:50:43] - holy shit, chuck norris is 67 years old? - pierce

[2007-10-22 15:48:58] - everybody, my email address has changed.  add "-friends" to my current email address.  dewey added my name to plaxo two years ago and my spam system has been overloaded ever since.  ~a

[2007-10-22 15:43:45] - a: thanks.  i just wanted to make sure there wasn't something wrong with your mail server.  :)  -  aba

[2007-10-22 15:41:14] - aba:  i replied to your email.  ~a

[2007-10-22 15:33:29] - aba:  don't worry, i got it.  ~a

[2007-10-22 15:24:57] - a: i emailed you but got a "local delivery failed" bounceback.  -  aba

[2007-10-22 15:15:21] - it's a dumb little easter egg that works on some linux systems.  basically any debian derivative: knoppix, ubuntu, kubuntu, damn small linux . . .  ~a

[2007-10-22 15:11:19] - ok, so what does that title mean? ("apt-get moo" is what I'm referring to, before someone changes it) - vinnie

[2007-10-22 14:54:17] - http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2007/10/22/huckabee_nabs_coveted_chuck_no.html I'm not sure if this is a joke or not. :-) -Paul

[2007-10-21 22:15:42] - - pierce

[2007-10-21 22:15:36] - a: all is forgiven, buddy

[2007-10-21 19:08:53] - pierce:  you're right.  i didn't answer your question.  sorry, man.  ~a

[2007-10-21 12:48:31] - a: if you'd said "I'm going to go get a haircut" there wouldn't have been much suspense, would there?  also, you were so busy being pedantic that you didn't answer my f'n question. - pierce

[2007-10-21 10:22:01] - "i need a haircut".  not "i'm going to go get a haircut".  ~a

[2007-10-21 00:12:29] - a: so what happened?  did you get a haircut?  the suspense is killing me! - pierce

[2007-10-19 17:11:29] - i need a haircut.  ~a

[2007-10-19 16:23:21] - Market took a haircut today. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-19 13:43:10] - firefox add-ons that i like  ~a

[2007-10-19 13:33:48] - pierce:  i don't have headphones at work.  i just assumed it was all there.  ~a

[2007-10-19 13:33:10] - pierce:  i use refcontrol to block 3rd party referrers.  it's sweet.  ~a

[2007-10-19 13:27:54] - but it chops off zoidberg's punchline!  that's the funniest part! - pierce

[2007-10-19 13:27:19] - a: nm, it just doesn't allow external links.  if you copy and paste the URL it works. - pierce

[2007-10-19 12:47:55] - a: I think that's probably true for lots of problems, not just wikipedia vandalism; and probably not just limited to high school. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-19 12:31:26] - man, there is soooo much less vandalism to wikipedia over the summer when kids aren't stuck in high school sitting at computers.  ~a

[2007-10-19 11:32:55] - a: happened to me years ago when i first found the bad candy site, except it was high school computer science camp instead of work. .) but it no longer has the same effect on me .( -amy

[2007-10-19 11:29:33] - i hate it when i'm reading something and i have to stop reading it because i'm laughing too loudly at work.  ~a

[2007-10-19 09:18:46] - aaron:  because their computer thinks i had the car for 10 days (instead of 2-3 hours).  ~a

[2007-10-19 09:05:05] - a: i don't get it, why did they charge you extra? - aaron

[2007-10-19 09:04:21] - http://kittenwar.com/kittens/111173/ cute kitten - aaron

[2007-10-19 08:55:10] - great.  i was just charged $1000 extra for a car that i rented for personal purposes (it wasn't for work).  MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOD DAMN RECEIPT if you ever return a rental car.  omg, $1000 on a $100 rental is not cool.  i had the car for less than three hours!  thank jeebus i kept the fucking receipt all 215 miles of biking and the 1 month after the trip.    ~a

[2007-10-18 14:39:48] - a: the monitor is really broken, very hard to see anything. they just keep the machine unplugged now, which implies to me they don't care to fix it. it's been a few months now anyway and they haven't fixed it - vinnie

[2007-10-18 14:24:14] - somebody remind me what the fudge is wrong with nvcc?  is it broken, or off, or gone?  ~a

[2007-10-18 13:51:44] - a: Um... 10% maybe? -Paul

[2007-10-18 12:12:55] - Vinnie: It's a condominium hotel, so it's both.  Individual investors buy the condos for secondary residence purposes, then lease/sublet the unit out when they're not in town to recoup the higher payments ala a hotel.  They were very popular in some markets for a short while.  Recent RE downturn has killed them fast, though.  -- Xpovos

[2007-10-18 12:11:38] - Paul: I think that's a large part of it, yeah.  But regardless, that model is a bad idea. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-18 11:59:14] - paul:  about what % of your income is from bonuses?  ~a

[2007-10-18 11:42:40] - paul: i thought it was a hotel? - vinnie

[2007-10-15 23:56:33] - paul: imho, the upsides to buying an SUV make them a bad buy for all but a small subset of people unless you are buying them based on aesthetics (and then i think there is something just plain weird about you  :P).  -  aba

[2007-10-15 23:54:51] - paul:  right, i know he didn't say that.  my point was because he didn't say that, we were telling him that an SUV probably wasn't the best buy for him.  there are plenty of sedans out there that are big and roomy that are much safer to drive in inclement weather.  if he's only going on rough terrain 3-5x a year, it's probably better to rent for those 3-5x times.  -  aba

[2007-10-15 18:23:35] - I rented an SUV-esque vehicle for a trip to FL this past summer.  We needed enough space to comfortable transport 4 adults plus luggage roughly 900 miles.  In retrospect a mini-van would have worked better, but the SUV was fine and actually did decently well.  Gas mileage was in the low 20s since the vast majority was highway at speed.  -- Xpovos

[2007-10-15 17:43:28] - aba: I thought he said he wanted to buy it because it was bigger and roomier and could handle rough terrain better. I don't recall him saying he wanted it for the image. -Paul

[2007-10-15 14:31:54] - riding off road 3-5 times per year sounds like a good reason to me.  although an suv might not be the best thing for off road use, it'll be a lot better than a car.  ~a

[2007-10-15 02:52:31] - sam: if you want to buy an SUV for the image, just admit that and we'll all leave you alone (but be quietly judging you in our minds).  :P  the reasons that you are giving don't make much sense though.  -  aba

[2007-10-15 02:51:43] - sam: also, if you read the link i pasted earlier, SUVs are really really bad for inclement weather if you don't know what you're doing.  you can accelerate better (which makes you think you have better traction), but you don't have any advantage when it comes to braking.  people in SUVs are much more likely to have an accident in bad weather because they go too fast. - aba

[2007-10-15 02:50:24] - sam:  keep in mind that SUVs are really not designed to go offroading..... they only give that illusion.  jeeps are meant to go offroading (hence why they aren't very comfortable).  i agree with a here though; rent something if your intention is only to go 3-5 times per year.  much more cost effective.  -  aba

[2007-10-14 23:17:29] - a:  well, i just ride with a friend who has an SUV (jeep wrangler) whenever we go off roads.  but if i have my own i would like to drive there also.  plus his jeep wrangler is very small and the passenger seats are very uncomfortable...  -sam

[2007-10-14 23:01:52] - if any of your friends has an off road vehicle, an suv might be redundant.  ~a

[2007-10-14 23:00:40] - sam:  wow, that's quite a lot.  i'll admit, an suv might be the right thing for you.  just remember that you're going to have to drive to work 250 times per year, drive to a friends house 50 times per year, drive to the grocery store 25 times per year, and like 10 long on-road road trips.  compared to the 3-5, 325 is a fair amount of driving on the road.  ~a

[2007-10-14 17:09:35] - pierce: what is the main reason that an environmentally-minded or budget-minded individual would advise against an SUV?  Is it the massive fuel comsumption?  But a lot of high horse power sports cars are massive fuel consumers too.  -sam

[2007-10-14 17:05:33] - a: it depends... maybe about 3-5 times per year? -sam

[2007-10-14 16:48:03] - sam: ...however, if you don't have a recurring need to drive on rough terrain, and since northern virginia doesn't often have paralyzingly inclement weather, the environmentally-minded or budget-minded individual would probably advise against an SUV. - pierce

[2007-10-14 16:47:12] - sam: I'm not going to pass judgement on you for wanting an SUV... as was mentioned, I used to have a hand-me-down explorer but I personally prefer smaller cars... - pierce

[2007-10-14 15:11:15] - I also want a vehicle that passengers can ride comfortably and have enough room for cargo. -sam

[2007-10-14 15:06:40] - I want a bigger and roomier vehicle (but not too big) that can be driven on rough terrain or on snow or during inclement  weather.  what vehicle would you reccommend then?  -sam

[2007-10-14 15:01:37] - aba: what is the "right" reason for buying an SUV? -sam

[2007-10-14 13:29:40] - sam: what snow?  do you still live in northern virginia?  :P  like i said, i think SUVs are appropriate for some situations, but it seems to me like you are buying an SUV for the wrong reasons.  -  aba

[2007-10-13 21:33:22] - aba: but ford explorers are notorious for rolling over.  i don't think all SUVs are like that. -sam

[2007-10-13 21:32:25] - a: well, i don't really go on rough terrain that often because i don't have a vehicle suitable for that (I will probably go more often if I do have one).  Also, I don't want to be immobilized whenever there is a snow storm.  I have hard time driving on the snow with my Solara. -sam

[2007-10-12 10:47:15] - paul:  in addition to the danger of rolling, SUVs tend to have a smaller than normal rear window.  it adds to the feeling of being in a "safe cocoon", but it makes your blind spots even worse!  -  aba

[2007-10-12 10:45:08] - paul:  i'm no totally anti-SUV.  if you have a need for off-roading or live in a place like alaska, then it totally makes sense to own an SUV.  for most people it's overkill and it's unsafe in an accident.  -  aba
