[2007-11-16 18:21:47] - kaleb: the last time i flew, they flagged me for a check of trace explosive matter...... i had to stand in a machine while puffs of air blew particulate matter of my clothing for instantaneous testing.  it was bizarro.  -  aba

[2007-11-16 14:12:04] - kaleb: my guess is that they're going to have the x-ray machine replace your bag with an identical one filled with springy snakes.  Then when you open it, all the TSA folks will scream "BOOGABOOGA" as the snakes fly out at you. - pierce

[2007-11-16 13:07:32] - amy / pierce: As if airport security wasn't a pain in the ass already, this is going to make things even worse. What the hell does "more aggressive, visible and unpredictable security measures" mean? Random full-cavity body searches? - Kaleb

[2007-11-15 12:53:03] - aaron: Pick up a panther chameleon while you're there. =} --- Also, Happy Birthday, Vinnie! - Kaleb

[2007-11-15 12:53:00] - a: I don't, it was a figure of speech in this case, indicating that I would not generally be in favor of consuming chameleons, even if they were a Thai delicacy. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-15 12:26:42] - xpovos:  i know i'm going to feel dumb for asking this . . . but, why do you have an "approved menu"?  ~a

[2007-11-15 12:21:49] - aaron: That's not a good sign... I think I'd eat somewhere else, unless lizard was on my approved menu. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-15 11:43:06] - http://64.233.169.104/search?q=thai%20pilin i was looking for a restaurant in tysons corner and... what is going in with this first page? - aaron

[2007-11-15 11:11:32] - aaron:  omg.  "Anonymous page creation will be reenabled on English Wikipedia"  This means just anybody can create a new page (you don't need to even create an account to create a new article let alone edit existing articles).  this is going to suck on so many levels.  ~a

[2007-11-15 09:07:15] - Vinnie: HAPPY BDAY! ~gurkie

[2007-11-12 14:43:48] - yeah, i always have fast indexing turned off in windows for the same reason.  in linux i have it on because it indexes when i'm sleeping.  ~a

[2007-11-12 14:40:20] - I don't know how far the technology has come as far as Windows is concerned (I haven't fully tried WDS), but I may want to try it out again soon. - Kaleb

[2007-11-12 14:39:35] - a: No prob. I think I actually have fast indexing turned off, but I'll have to check. I had problems with third party apps indexing my hard drives in the past because I would typically search directories containing hundreds of gigs of stuff and the performance for both the indexing and the searching was really bad.

[2007-11-12 14:10:39] - kaleb:  the sidebar functionality in windows xp does use indexing.  though you can disable the indexing and it will still work.  . . . i don't know the answer to your question, sorry.  ~a

[2007-11-12 13:55:37] - a: It's the integrated Explorer search (sidebar) functionality in Windows XP. Not to be confused with Windows Desktop Search. I use it all the time because I find it works very well and doesn't rely on indexing (as far as I know). - Kaleb

[2007-11-12 13:52:29] - is that some sort of desktop search?  ~a

[2007-11-12 13:34:36] - what is "search companion"?  ~a

[2007-11-12 13:23:12] - Anyone know of an image viewer for Windows other than Picture & Fax viewer that takes into account search results from the Search Companion when determining forward and back image navigation? IrfanView doesn't do this, and neither does FastStone MaxView. - Kaleb

[2007-11-12 11:20:34] - :'(  ~a

[2007-11-12 11:17:23] - a: ONLY KIDDING! ~gurkie

[2007-11-12 11:08:24] - i <3 work! but i like vacation time even more! I totally just scheduled 3 weeks off (between now and end of year)! SO EXCITED!  ~gurkie

[2007-11-12 10:17:18] - i will be going to work later. i *hope* the store's open... i don't really fancy driving to haymarket and back for no reason .) -amy

[2007-11-12 09:54:29] - vinnie: It's a federal holiday, many companies use that as a guideline for holidays; at least a starting point, though they may flex a few days, or switch a few around. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-12 09:36:03] - yeah I am. I didn't think too many non-government people got veteran's day off - vinnie

[2007-11-12 09:03:00] - me.  ~a

[2007-11-12 08:19:44] - Anyone else at work today (Veteren's Day (observed))? -- Xpovos

[2007-11-11 11:12:08] - xpovos:  the message board prefers latitude and longitude or ecef.  ~a

[2007-11-09 17:06:16] - Xpovos: I don't regret my NSTK sale, but what a wild market. -Paul

[2007-11-09 16:49:25] - title: who set you? -amy

[2007-11-09 14:13:04] - Paul: Depends on how much further down NSTK goes, right? -- Xpovos

[2007-11-09 12:03:40] - Xpovos: Somewhat. I actually decided to bail out on NSTK for now (which I admit is probably the worst possible time). The rest of my stocks are up on average, though. -Paul

[2007-11-09 11:15:26] - Paul: Another rugged day? -- Xpovos

[2007-11-08 16:30:03] - works out perfectly. I was just about to tell you guys I wasn't going to make it today :) - vinnie

[2007-11-08 16:06:00] - me either.  i have a work thing.  vinnie, you're all alone today.  :(  ~a

[2007-11-08 15:58:13] - ddr_people: no ddr for me today :-[ - aaron

[2007-11-08 14:54:06] - Paul: My bad.  Today's actually hitting me too.  Still not 'hard', but not plesant either.  Friday will be interesting. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-08 13:43:47] - a: I have a fear of computers to this day - vinnie

[2007-11-08 13:21:21] - Xpovos: Actually, it was down 40% yesterday overall. :-) -Paul

[2007-11-08 11:31:56] - Paul: Double down! -25% and -20% = Buy more! :-P -- Xpovos

[2007-11-08 10:53:50] - It's funny to look at my portfolio in the past couple of months. I've had wild 20% swings in value. Sadly, I'm in a down swing right now. Maybe the next time it swings up I should just sell everything. :-P -Paul

[2007-11-08 10:49:24] - paul:  "i've noticed that drops are very rarely an over-reaction.  they're almost always an under-reaction."  called it!  ~a

[2007-11-08 10:46:03] - Xpovos: It's ok, NSTK is down almost another 20% today. :-) -Paul

[2007-11-08 10:28:09] - were you traumatized?  ~a

[2007-11-08 09:57:31] - aaron: sad mac used to scare me as a kid. and worse was the bomb icon when something crashed. I thought our Mac was going to blow up - vinnie

[2007-11-08 09:35:02] - a: Microcap stock went up 20% two days ago and another 6% yesterday.  My other stock only went down a very small bit.  Basically, I made money because I'm not divirsified right now. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-08 09:31:32] - xpovos:  how the hell did you pull that off?  ~a

[2007-11-08 08:22:03] - Paul: Ow.  I actually made money yesterday (ignoring the 401/403). -- Xpovos

[2007-11-08 07:53:42] - pierce: i saw that last night, i was surprised by how many people dressed up as thnikkaman... wtf? thnikkaman? - aaron

[2007-11-07 13:36:51] - What really hurts is that ONXX was my former speculative stock and that guy is up nearly 20% today. -Paul

[2007-11-07 13:27:08] - i've noticed that drops are very rarely an over-reaction.  they're almost always an under-reaction.  ~a

[2007-11-07 11:34:42] - Pat Robertson endorses Guiliani? WTF? -- Xpovos

[2007-11-07 10:44:38] - Paul: I know that feeling.  I need to learn to keep more of my investment money in cash so I can buy stuff on drops.  Like 3M or Walgreen's. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-07 10:15:09] - Xpovos: I'm thinking of doing the same thing with mine, since I think this is an over-reaction and the stock is still sound. Have to sell one of my other stocks to do that, though. :-) -Paul

[2007-11-07 10:04:27] - Paul: That is rough.  My spec play is up pretty decently past two days.  I think I could actually sell it for a marginal profit now.  But only because I rebought after a 30+% decline. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-07 09:48:13] - a: NSTK. It's my speculative stock so I can't say it's totally unexpected. Still hurts though. -Paul

[2007-11-07 09:37:35] - paul:  which one?  ~a

[2007-11-07 09:25:39] - This is going to be a rough day for my portfolio. I just discovered one of my stocks is down 25% in pre-market activity. :-( -Paul

[2007-11-07 08:01:08] - Paul: I read through the play by play and I still can't really tell.  Apparently they have a decent defense and an unbelievably bad offense to go with it.  The overtime drive is perhaps the most entertaining. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-06 08:56:21] - Xpovos: That somewhat surprises me. I would've thought Elliot would be sympathetic to a guy like Ron Paul. Maybe all he knows is that he's a Republican. -Paul

[2007-11-06 08:42:00] - Paul: My driver this morning was listening to the talk shows (Junkies and Elliott: being the drawback of slugging), Elliott had a caller going on about that Ron Paul haul.  Elliott of course mauled her viciously.  It didn't help that she wasn't a U.S. citizen... -- Xpovos

[2007-11-05 16:41:20] - a: I disagree with your face. - pierce

[2007-11-05 16:26:53] - i disagree with one of your implications.  i don't think they were thinking about (or didn't know about) the inappropriate/immature term when they originally thought up of the name.  . . . but . . . now they do know about the term.  and they probably should have renamed the component.  and they didn't.  ~a

[2007-11-05 16:13:45] - that's not such a bad thing when it's just an innocuous silly name, but "camel toe" is more inappropriate and immature than most of them. - pierce

[2007-11-05 16:12:41] - a: I don't think it's malice, but I don't think it's incompetence.  I think it's folks making a joke (like "Wine Is Not an Emulator") without thinking about how the silly name (Jabber, Ogg Vorbis) might affect people in professional evironments who have to explain the term to non-techies. - pierce

[2007-11-05 15:57:19] - pierce:  i think this is a case of ascribing to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.  ~a

[2007-11-05 15:35:37] - "hahah, we can make this a wacky sexual reference, and fuck the business users who will have to use the term in mixed company!" - pierce

[2007-11-05 15:34:43] - a: It may not be horrible, but it certainly isn't good, and the news is just abysmal.  $6.5B in writedowns last quarter, they had to restate their earnings down another $150M+, and are already projecting another $8-11B in writedowns next quarter.  Everett Dirksen at work again. -- Xpovos

[2007-11-04 14:22:47] - pierce:  running "sc stop beep" and "sc config beep start= disabled" on the windows command line will also disable this annoying beep (i.e. a beep that is unaffected by your soundcard volume settings) for all applications.  ~a

[2007-11-01 17:20:25] - oh i know why.  the mutual funds haven't registered yet.  i'm sure i'll be down over 1k when they're all said and done.  ~a

[2007-11-01 17:19:38] - paul:  all of my stocks are in the red.  one of them at -6% and another at -7% a few at -3%.  surprisingly, i'm only down .5k (just over 1%).  ~a

[2007-11-01 12:50:03] - vinnie: which song? i have two of her albums so i may have heard it - aaron

[2007-10-31 17:22:02] - aaron: ANOTHER Blectum coincidence - Amy lent me a mix CD a friend gave her. it has a Blectum from Blechdom song on it. this girl appears to be popping up in a million places - vinnie

[2007-10-31 17:13:07] - wow I totally didnt read that earlier, I think it is ridiculous. I am with Vinnie in that I may have been kicked out freshman year with that rule. And I agree with everyone who essentially said that no one at TJ intentionally does bad, we wouldnt have gone to that school if we were afraid of standing out as smart. ~gurkie

[2007-10-31 17:09:27] - high school is a messed-up enough time for kids without hanging the threat of "perform, or we'll take you away from all your friends" over their heads.  they went through a selective application process already, let them enjoy the rest of their teenage years. - pierce

[2007-10-31 17:06:39] - I certainly wouldn't have taken BC Calc, because even though I got a 104% on the cumulative final exam and a 5 on the AP exam, I ended up with a D in the class.  My vice was a lack of homework, but it represents the larger problem that this policy will create a very restrictive cutoff based on a very subjective measurement. -  pierce

[2007-10-31 17:04:03] - my position on the TJ rule change is, I never got the sense while I was there that what the school needed was more grade grubbing and more stress about academic performance.  yes, it's possible that this policy would've made me work just hard enough to keep myself above the line, but I don't feel like I would've been any smarter or happier for it... - pierce

[2007-10-31 15:49:32] - xpovos:  don't rip too many up.  we don't want deflation.  then all the losers in debt will start freaking out.  ~a

[2007-10-31 15:12:57] - RIP USD.  Seriously, might as well rip a few up.  Here comes inflation. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-31 13:29:14] - RIP robert goulet

[2007-10-31 13:00:33] - better than a free taco if you go to Chipotle dressed as a Burrito (this entailed a piece of tinfoil on my head) you get a free burritto! Its supposed to be from 5-10PM but we just got them for lunch ~gurkie

[2007-10-31 12:30:50] - It concerns me most in terms of grade inflation.  Maybe that won't be as much of an issue at TJ as it would at every other school, but how many teachers anywhere will be willing to give a student the grade that essentially expels him from school?  Hence a B is the new D. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-31 12:07:48] - aaron:  it still creates unnecessary pressure on borderline students.  also the rationalization is moronic (we have to stop kids from intentioanlly getting low grades!) - mig

[2007-10-31 11:51:19] - pierce: the way the article is phrased doesn't make it sound like a hard rule. it's not as dumb as the title makes it sound - aaron

[2007-10-31 10:02:39] - vinnie:  that's what pierce said.  i think it's very very dumb.  the school is already too hard on students that have trouble.  ~a

[2007-10-31 10:01:26] - title:  heh.  ~a

[2007-10-31 09:33:57] - then again, I was also being a slacker and the rule would have probably prompted me to try harder - vinnie

[2007-10-31 09:33:19] - hm I would have been kicked out after freshman year if we had had that rule, I'm nearly certain. I know my GPA was hovering below 3.0 - vinnie

[2007-10-31 01:05:28] - aaron:  check out this cool youtube video?  (doesn't really point to the right place, but i don't care enough to get it fixed)  ~a

[2007-10-30 11:44:23] - a: How do you define poverty? Is it relative to the rich people or is it some absolute measurement? -Paul

[2007-10-30 11:41:17] - a: I know he's not your favorite philosopher, but a well-respected man did once say, "The poor you will always have."  He also said some stuff about feeding the hungry, so I think we can assume he also figured there's always be hunger. -- Xpovos

[2007-10-30 11:24:10] - i.e. decrease (all but eliminate) world hunger.  ~a

[2007-10-30 11:23:20] - actually, i think "balance wealth" isn't really what i want.  what i want is a great reduction of poverty.  ~a
