[2013-04-02 10:22:26] - is this on Kaldir or Char? - mig

[2013-04-02 10:18:58] - Xpovos: Yeah, I learned that really early on. How far in before you failed your first mission? I'm only on the 5th or so mission and I've already failed often (playing on hard). -Paul

[2013-04-02 10:02:53] - Fact I learned losing my first mission in HotS last night.  If Kerrigan dies, she doesn't.  And you don't lose the mission automatically.  She respawns after 60 seconds, back at base.  If she's in deep territory that can actually be a huge advantage. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-02 10:02:04] - I remember that one being 'fun' on Hard.  I just surrounded Tychus with SCVs by the boatload.  I can't remember what other unit tactics I used. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-02 09:50:47] - Xpovos: I think I actually had the hardest time with the mission where they steal the Odin, just as a heads up. Not sure if the Planetary Fortresses did MUCH good, but they at least slowed things down a little bit. Surprising how fast they died, though. -Paul

[2013-04-02 09:38:34] - Paul: That's my strategy, but I didn't choose Planetary Fortress, so I probably will reverse that option before I try it on Brutal.  I beat all the missions on Hard except SuperNova. And I can probably do that safely enough now that I have Science Vessels. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-02 09:24:44] - be able to do with Microsoft. - mig

[2013-04-02 09:24:38] - daniel:  i do wonder about any battle.net related things.  Back when they accounced D3 they mentioned a "strategic partnership" with sony.  But if D3 isn't going to be an exclusive from what it sounds like, than I have to wonder what the partnership really is.  Only thing I can think of is some integration of the PSN and Battle.net, something they definitely wouldn't

[2013-04-02 09:21:16] - I agree that Marine balls just seemed to disappear to Kerrigan. I think I ended up killing the flyers and basically just using massive balls of siege tanks and some planetary fortresses with a lot of SCVs repairing them. -Paul

[2013-04-02 09:20:19] - Xpovos: Sorry I missed most of the SC2 discussion. Is "All-In" the last mission? I've beaten it on Insane (or Brutal or whatever the hardest is called), but it took me a TON of tries. -Paul

[2013-04-02 08:42:00] - Daniel: It can be played online, but only with PS3 copies.  So I don't know if it uses Battle.net. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-02 00:21:44] - I know it can be played offline, but does that mean you can still play online?  -Daniel

[2013-04-02 00:20:55] - anyone know if ps3 d3 still uses battle.net?  Can you play your PC characters?  -Daniel

[2013-04-01 15:02:00] - http://penny-arcade.com/report/article/diablo-3-on-the-playstation-3-isnt-just-functional-its-far-better-than-its- here's some info about the PS3 port of Diablo 3 - aaron

[2013-04-01 14:16:21] - xpovos:  I almost got fooled by the Blizzard april fool's post in the SC2 page saying that the terran warhound was going to come back into the game, but alas, it was pretty obvious by the first line it was a joke. - mig

[2013-04-01 14:10:04] - mig: I'd like one more mode of play, something I've seen called Ironcore.  Basically it's seperated from SC/HC and has no auction house, and depending on version, no trading.  You can only survive on gear you find.  So to 'compensate' some the drops are supposed to be slightly better and perhaps more tuned to your class or something. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 14:07:31] - xpovos:  I think the main problem is too many people think the AH in of itself is the tool of the devil, as if they want to go back to the days of scavenging the trade channels for finding an item and hoping you don't get scammed. - mig

[2013-04-01 13:38:49] - mig: I was stunned in a bad way by the April Fool's joke.  It's not a Blizzard joke at least.  The AH has some serious drawbacks, and is worthy of some hate, but it is overall a good thing for the game.  Removing it would be bad. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 13:32:14] - xpovos:  I don't really get the vitriol over the AH honestly.  I think it's fine for the game. - mig

[2013-04-01 12:27:57] - Alternatively, I have just been April Fool's'd the fuck up. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 12:15:41] - In other Blizzard news--posting here because I don't think the other thread would be seen: the Diablo 3 AH (all types, Gold, RMAH, everything) will be discontinued in a short time. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 12:14:26] - mig: Ah, yeah, that makes a big difference. I got rid of the flyers.  I figured (partially correctly) that removing the brood lords in particular as well as the mutalisks would allow me to focus on siege tanks and bunkers.  The transporting overlords got me once, then I protected my rear with turrets. No flyers also made my Banshees king. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 11:54:44] - xpovos:  did you deal with nydus worms or the flyers? - mig

[2013-04-01 11:54:08] - mig: I couldn't replace marines fast enough to keep my bunkers full, let alone an M&M ball.  Or just an M ball.  I probably needed a second barracks? But I tried that once and I just couldn't keep up with all the micro. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 11:49:44] - xpovos:  true, but the thing is you can replace marines very quickly, and the death rate is much, much slower than using her statis to take out several battlecruisers, which aren't easily as replacable. - mig

[2013-04-01 11:49:34] - But in the meantime I'm capable of starting HotS, and am about 5 missions in on Hard there.  Not having the 'only zergling' issues mentioned below. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 11:48:38] - I won by just overloading both sides with tanks in siege mode and when she destroyed a side, I'd have 8 in queue and switch the hot deploy to the depleted zone.  Then send the Banshees out for the Nydus Wurms.  It was a lot of fun, but very hard, even on Hard.  Brutal is going to be ridiculous. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 11:47:15] - mig: The strategies I read almost all used Planetary Fortresses.  The problem with marines is that she has that AoE effect that deals decent damage, enough to take out an M&M ball pretty easily.  Her stasis effect is worse, though, in some ways because it takes out high value targets and quickly.  So, I dunno. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 11:39:32] - aaron:  :'(  ~a

[2013-04-01 11:36:47] - I think she'd probably wreck the fortresses too quickly. - mig

[2013-04-01 11:36:29] - xpovos:  not sure it would help.  The big problem in "All In" is that Kerrigan just mauls expensive units way too quickly.  Most of the strats I've read invovle making sure you have scores of marines ready for Kerrigan because she can't kill them efficiently. - mig

[2013-04-01 11:26:20] - mig: At least Terrans are set up to be defensive.  Zerg isn't.  I'm not there yet so if you have cross unit capacity (like in SC1/BW) I don't know about it.  I took me about 6-7 tries on Hard.  The last time I failed was so frustrating.  It was at 99.7% charged when I died.  Seriously?! On Brutal I think I need Planetary Fortresses. -- Xpovos

[2013-04-01 11:20:29] - xpovos:  actually now that you mentioned it, there's a very similar mission in the HoTS campaign, and I think it was by far the hardest mission in the entire game. - mig

[2013-04-01 11:03:27] - a: i think it's the same as 881810739797 in base 35 - aaron

[2013-03-31 17:05:54] - it took a while, on hard.    Still haven't beaten it on Brutal.  I think Mark mentioned that it was way harder if you choose to eliminate the flyers vs. flooding the nydus caverns. - mig

[2013-03-29 23:34:45] - How many times did you guys have to try "All In" in Wings of Liberty before you got through? -- Xpovos

[2013-03-29 18:26:04] - a: 643934984? -- Xpovos

[2013-03-29 17:07:22] - what is 627780191 in base 36?  ~a

[2013-03-28 15:27:59] - two of his exes are still shareholders?  hmm.  ~a

[2013-03-28 15:04:47] - I am but not sure if I'll get it right away.  Depends a lot on the final PS4 release date. - mig

[2013-03-28 14:53:01] - GTA V.  GTA 5.  That makes it look less like some random word I made up.  -Daniel

[2013-03-28 14:52:25] - aaron: I'm looking forward to GTAV.  -Daniel

[2013-03-28 14:48:32] - http://www.wired.com/business/2013/03/ipo-man/all/ a guy divided himself into 100,000 shares and held an IPO at $1 a share... investors received a portion of his earnings, and even voted on things like whether he should move in with his girlfriend or have a vasectomy - aaron

[2013-03-28 14:13:46] - a: yeah i'm not sure if it breaks it or not. the example they give of lists having a default implementation of "forEach" is still pretty tidy; i can't think of why you'd implement list AND implement a second interface which also had a default forEach... hmmm - aaron

[2013-03-28 12:50:10] - seems to kind of break the whole concept of default, but i guess that's better than supporting multiple inheritance :)  ~a

[2013-03-28 12:48:04] - class Test { interface A {default void m() {}} interface B {default void m() {}} class C implements A, B {} }  error: class Test.C inherits unrelated defaults for m() from types A and B  ~a

[2013-03-28 12:46:59] - sudo apt-get build-dep openjdk-7 && hg clone http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk8/jdk8 && cd jdk8 && sh get_source.sh && bash configure && make clean && make . . . ok, apparently, yes, java 8 gives you an error.  ~a

[2013-03-28 10:43:40] - a: i'm really happy about lambda functions though, that's one of those things that would turn 1 line of groovy code into 5 lines of java code... so it'll be really nice having those available in java 8 - aaron

[2013-03-28 10:41:10] - a: yeah, adding static methods made sense but i don't know how i feel about the default method thing. hopefully it'll just result in a conflict and an error - aaron

[2013-03-28 09:48:57] - multiple inheritance leads to some sketchy sketchy situations:  for example, lets say you implement two interfaces both of which have the same default method.  add complication: now each of those interfaces extend a common base interface.  when those default methods start talking to eachother, then the order of interfaces matter and then . . . crying and sadness.  ~a

[2013-03-28 09:45:40] - in other words, what's really so monumentally different between implementing multiple interfaces with default methods and extending multiple abstract classes (the latter is something that java disallows).  ~a

[2013-03-28 09:44:41] - oooh, i don't know if i'm ok with default methods in interfaces.  we're treading on dangerous ground:  multiple inheritance is (imo) dangerous.  default methods in interfaces are basically multiple inheritance.  ~a

[2013-03-28 09:18:37] - http://www.voanews.com/content/cyprus-reopens-banks-under-tight-controls/1630182.html The situation in Cyprus just keeps getting more ridiculous. -Paul

[2013-03-28 09:15:37] - http://www.techempower.com/blog/2013/03/26/everything-about-java-8/ new features being introduced in java 8 - aaron

[2013-03-27 16:58:26] - http://www.geekosystem.com/wachowskis-sense8-coming-to-netflix/ This sounds pretty awesome, but it could also be a mess. As much as I liked Babylon 5 and the Matrix movies (yes, even the last two), I also know those people have had some stinkers too. -Paul

[2013-03-27 12:49:14] - xpovos: honestly i kind of view this as a good thing, as it creates an economic incentive for people to pursue education... although i think there's some problems with our education system too, but that's kind of a wild tangent. basically, i think your statement is incorrect but i still agree the internet is a positive force - aaron

[2013-03-27 12:47:09] - xpovos: well, i kind of disagree -- your statement makes it sound like, "now that the internet is popular, there are all these intelligent laborers who have nothing to do". i think it's the opposite, the internet is keeping "intelligent people" busy but phasing out a lot of traditionally middle class jobs: postal workers, cashiers, military drones, etc - aaron

[2013-03-27 12:30:07] - http://qz.com/67323/how-the-internet-made-us-poor/  No, the internet has made us wealthy.  We now have a surfeit of labor, intelligent labor at that, that we can and are (though not as efficiently as we all hope) turning towards creating new things we'd never have had otherwise. -- Xpovos

[2013-03-27 12:02:47] - i was born without a straw?  ~a

[2013-03-27 12:02:39] - xpovos:  i didn't use the straw hole.  ~a

[2013-03-27 11:58:38] - http://imgur.com/a/GwHZH anybody looking forward to GTA 5? - aaron

[2013-03-27 11:58:22] - a: That orange juice is against equality.  Who is it to tell you that your orange juice relationship is wrong, just because you don't want to use the straw hole? -- Xpovos

[2013-03-27 11:54:38] - mig: https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/72331_10101962958028183_462842017_n.jpg here's the cake i was talking about. it was apparently created on an edible image printer -- not a 3D printer or anything, just something which prints flat edible images - aaron

[2013-03-27 11:52:42] - "PLEASE USE STRAW HOLE" said my orange juice.  ~a

[2013-03-27 10:33:48] - title: Hi. -- Xpovos

[2013-03-26 21:35:22] - oooooh.  ~a

[2013-03-26 19:59:11] - http://chrome.com/maze/ this was pretty hard to get working -- but it's by far the most impressive browser-based game i've ever seen, you use your phone as a controller to control a 3D game on your computer, which is dynamically generated based on a web page you specify. chrome only - aaron

[2013-03-26 17:50:58] - a definite one.  i just think it's dumb to look at total numbers instead of %s.  so the number of low-income people on disability almost tripled and the population as a whole went up by almost 50%.  so the % doubled (assuming the % of low-income people stayed fairly constant).  that's a trend.  ~a

[2013-03-26 17:47:47] - i agree it's a trend.  ~a

[2013-03-26 17:17:23] - a: So, yeah, using percentages might've made the trend a little less "severe", I think it's still fair to call it a trend. -Paul

[2013-03-26 17:16:44] - a: So even rounding the low-income disabled population very generously in favor of minimizing the change, we're still comparing a population which doubled vs a population which didn't even go up 50%. -Paul

[2013-03-26 17:15:49] - a: Let's make it simple and call it 3 million to 6 million. So while that population doubled, the US total population went from about 226 million to 314 million (https://www.google.com/publicdata/explore?ds=kf7tgg1uo9ude_&met_y=population&idim=country:US&dl=en&hl=en&q=united%20states%20population). -Paul

[2013-03-26 17:13:53] - a: Obvious, maybe. I'm not sure how problematic it is or what kind of bias it shows (a bias against percentages?). If I am reading one of the graphs correctly, the number of low-income people on disability went from a little over 2 million in 1980 to almost 7 million now. -Paul

[2013-03-26 17:09:55] - a: Maybe, but you are handpicking one specific type of mental illness. Maybe somebody who was bipolar and undiagnosed 20 years ago would be able to work with minimal difficulty. Just because they are diagnosed now, does that make them any less able to work? -Paul

[2013-03-26 16:23:02] - "I don't know if it alters the crux of the article much"  it's an obvious and problematic bias.  ~a

[2013-03-26 16:22:48] - paul:  undiagnosed or unmedicated schizophrenics don't work.  ~a

[2013-03-26 16:02:05] - a: As for the mental illness part, I also don't think that changes what her point was in that section. Sure, it might get diagnosed more now, but a lot of people used to work before they were diagnosed with mental illnesses. Does simply having one make you disabled? -Paul

[2013-03-26 16:00:32] - a: Yeah, I found it to be a pretty interesting (and enlightening) article. Percentages would be nice, but I don't know if it alters the crux of the article much. -Paul

[2013-03-26 15:51:44] - s/he/she/ oops.  ~a

[2013-03-26 15:40:32] - more on the other side.  "mental illness ... fastest growing causes of disability"  yeah, because we're much better at diagnosing it.  i doubt depression is the mental illness they're talking about here.  i further doubt in the 1961, nearly as many people were on disability because of schizophrenia.  That doesn't mean there were fewer % schizophrenics in 1961.  ~a

[2013-03-26 15:40:05] - on the other side of the argument though, he focuses more on total dollars and total people.  he focuses much less on %s.  this is very misleading as the population hasn't stayed constant.  ~a

[2013-03-26 15:31:10] - i like the graphs.  ~a

[2013-03-26 15:26:48] - "as the number of families on welfare declined, the number of low-income people on disability rose."  hmmm.  ~a

[2013-03-26 14:12:43] - http://apps.npr.org/unfit-for-work/ "The federal government spends more money each year on cash payments for disabled former workers than it spends on food stamps and welfare combined." -Paul

[2013-03-26 14:12:21] - alternatively you can always route your internet over your phone.  . . . i hate it when ISPs decide how i am to use their internet, so i almost always proxy everything through my home machine.  ~a

[2013-03-26 14:11:18] - proxy server.  ~a

[2013-03-26 14:10:22] - a: both urls blocked for me now at work, not really sure what the algorithm is since none of the postings seems block worthy.  -Daniel

[2013-03-26 13:14:14] - Paul: My guess is they really like dogs or really hate drugs.  Alternatively, it's in the best interest of the state to have the best interest of the person in mind... but I can't peer into Kennedy or Breyer's mind well.  They do things I can't comprehend fairly frequently.  Scalia at least I usually understand his brand of insanity. -- Xpovos

[2013-03-26 13:07:16] - mig: I'm not sure what the rationale is for Kennedy and Breyer, though. :-P -Paul

[2013-03-26 13:06:40] - mig: I guess what we've learned is that Alito and Roberts are apparently even more likely to defer to law enforcement. My only guess is that Scalia and Thomas's constitutional concerns overrode their desire to defer to law enforcement. -Paul

[2013-03-26 13:03:16] - xpovos:  I guess i'm not shocked at the 5-4 split, but just how the split worked out.  Even more so since Scalia and Thomas tend to be more deferring to law enforcement on these types of issues. - mig

[2013-03-26 13:01:22] - mig: I saw that decision earlier today.  It's so clearly the right one I can't believe the dissent numbers 4.  Despite what a lot of people thing about Scalia he's a pretty sane justice.  I'll be watching him on the DOMA and Prop 8 cases in particular.  I can see him even giving a split decision (anti-DOMA, pro-Prop 8). -- Xpovos

[2013-03-26 12:59:44] - http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/12pdf/11-564_jifl.pdf SCOTUS decision ruling taking a drug sniffing dog into a private residence to have it sniff for drugs constitutes a search and thus requires a warrant. [2013-03-26 12:58:13] - a: Well, I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as you don't mind the occasional repost. I've already trained myself to just click on the address bar and press enter instead of refreshing. -Paul

[2013-03-26 12:53:02] - i'd like to avoid the "refresh causes reposting" and there should be a way as a server, to prevent that.  ~a

[2013-03-26 12:52:30] - i think paul was kidding.  ~a

[2013-03-26 12:49:04] - a: I agree with Paul to a certain extent, this is not a 'bug' in your web code.  It isn't even likely a bug in Chrome, it's probably some vestige of an intended feature. I just noticed it and have taken local measures to prevent the problem. -- Xpovos

[2013-03-26 12:27:05] - a: It's not a bug, it's a feature? I can repost what I just said with a single click! -Paul

[2013-03-26 12:25:16] - xpovos/daniel:  when i made the first iteration of the message board in 1999, i learned to use the http 302 code using the "Location" header.  the reason i did that was to avoid this whole:  refresh causes reposting.  this process has been working for me for the past 15 years.  i'm not sure what i should do.  the internet forums about this "bug" confuse me.  ~a

[2013-03-26 12:20:12] - ooh!! i haven't seen that reposting bug since the 90s. chrome is so cool and retro - aaron

[2013-03-26 12:16:03] - wtf, chrome?  ~a

[2013-03-26 09:46:14] - Xpovos: Yeah, it is. I don't remember how long ago it started, but I mentioned it on the message board. I think it's the same problem, because I'm also using Chrome. -Paul

[2013-03-26 09:23:34] - Paul: Ah, but is it new for you? This is new for me.  Inside the past three weeks I'd say. -- Xpovos

[2013-03-26 06:21:40] - Xpovos: I have the same issue. -Paul

[2013-03-25 19:46:15] - I still have no problems loading the site (yay) but recently if I post and try to reload it tries to repost the message repeatedly (resends POST data).  That's a new thing, seemed to work fine before.  Because I'm on Chrome I have no idea if I had an update under my radar or if there's been a page code change to give me the difference. -- Xpovos

[2013-03-25 16:16:50] - http://edition.cnn.com/2013/03/25/world/europe/berezovsky-profile/?hpt=hp_c1 I really hope I never get on Putin's bad side... -Paul

[2013-03-25 12:16:39] - a: interesting, i will try that once I'm unable to see teh board again

[2013-03-25 11:51:34] - daniel:  you can also try http://paul.w.aporter.org/msg/ if you want to see if they're only blocking certain subdomains.  ~a

[2013-03-25 11:18:57] - I can see the board again.  I'm still not entirely sure why sometimes its blocked and sometimes its not.  I wonder if my company does a keyword filter or something and depending on what is being talked about sometimes it gets blocked.  -Daniel

[2013-03-25 10:49:00] - a: Yeah, I know, and I agree they're probably just trying to find out who disapprove of interracial marriage. That's why I don't like the phrasing. The wording of questions matter, and I wonder if the wording of this one skewed things. -Paul

[2013-03-25 10:46:37] - i don't walk down the street, see barrack obama, and think to myself, "i'm sad he's the president".  i don't disapprove of him.  so, i'd probably show up as approving of him.  ~a

[2013-03-25 10:44:35] - paul:  i think the question is using definition #3.  a synonymous question (IMO) would be "do you not disapprove of interracial marriage?"  ~a

[2013-03-25 09:38:53] - a: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/approve By definition #3, sure. By definition #2, not as much. I don't think it's any better than any other kind of marriage (Intraracial or outerracial). -Paul

[2013-03-25 09:25:17] - intraracial.  do you approve of interracial marriage?  ~a

[2013-03-25 09:08:04] - a: Yes, and I think that's a far better way of asking the question than asking if somebody "approves" of interracial marriage. I don't necessarily approve of interracial marriage any more than I approve of... outerracial marriage? -Paul

[2013-03-21 14:04:26] - a:  Hypocrisy I guess.  Animal shelters are a popular target of PETA protesters because they euthanize unadoptable animals.  I'm not sure why it's news now though.  It's been part of the public record for a long time that PETA does in fact euthanize a lot of animals.  - mig

[2013-03-21 10:14:05] - mig: Yeah, I talked to Dave a little about this. It's almost like they couldn't have screwed up worse if they tried. They were worried about banks going under.... so they enact a policy that ensures bank runs. -Paul

[2013-03-21 10:13:56] - i was wondering about that . . . i kind of want multiple feeds.  one where stuff gets updated a few times per day, and another that is constantly scrolling.  i know facebook has that concept already.  there's the middle feed that updates pretty often and the upper-right tiny-feed that updates like every second.  ~a

[2013-03-21 09:06:09] - a: Facebook might work well as a feed reader (at least I wouldn't have to put up with the maddeningly confusing way Facebook decides what to show me) but I think the message board and my twitter feed updates too often. -Paul

[2013-03-19 09:25:09] - Of course that reasonable expectation of privacy is a bit of a sticking point, given Facebook, but I'll work with it for now.  Then the requirement to hand over my "keys" (password) to another so that they can squat in my house and watch what I do is pretty clearly a violation.  The issue of it being a private company vs. a government agency is why I'm trying the 3rd.

[2013-03-19 09:23:37] - fuck.  ... win.  I said I'd have fun. :-)  If I can lock it and assumed a reasonable degree of privacy because of that lock, and it is a place that I habitually frequent, populate with stuff and has "walls" it's pretty clearly a home.  I mean, rich people get to have, like, 50 homes if they want.  Now everyone has a digital home, even if they're homeless. -- Xpovos
