[2008-05-08 11:28:35] - xpovos:  mysql_data_seek?  you can rewind a result back to row_number 0 with that.  ~a

[2008-05-08 10:59:52] - I figure, Oh, I forgot to reset the pointer, so I reset($obj); no improvement.  Basically nothing actually resets/restore the object except a new query. I've even tried storing the object as a new object and then reiterating with the new object... so the question is: what is causing this effect, and how do I solve it? -- Xpovos

[2008-05-08 10:57:49] - Programming question: I have a PHP program query my SQL data base and return a result as an object.  I then parse that object into rows (arrays) that PHP understands and then do stuff with them.  I then go back and attempt to reparse the object into rows, but this iteration fails, it prints out nothing.  -- Xpovos

[2008-05-08 10:54:43] - Well, fuck.  Nevermind. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-08 10:54:30] - More accurately: Buzzard's Point -- Xpovos

[2008-05-08 10:03:20] - paul:  navy yard dc.  ~a

[2008-05-08 09:32:28] - Xpovos: Where do you work again? Isn't it up around here? -Paul

[2008-05-08 08:00:42] - a: 46 minutes today, door to door.  I think that's a record for my commute.  The driver happened to also work at my building so I got a ride straight there, no shuttle. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-08 00:00:47] - you're right.  ~a

[2008-05-07 18:30:26] - a: you can draw against your home equity so you can sort of un-pay-down your mortgage.....  -  aba

[2008-05-07 17:44:28] - xpovos:  see you in 15?  ~a

[2008-05-07 17:37:46] - Paul: Both A&A and Diplomacy sound fun, but I'm going to be at the release for MtG.  Damn not being able to bilocate. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 17:36:57] - though i'd always prefer deplomacy.  ~a

[2008-05-07 17:36:34] - paul:  i'm a maybe.  ~a

[2008-05-07 17:26:53] - Anybody interested in partaking in a game of Axis and Allies this Saturday? Dave is going to be coming down and I thought it could be fun if we got enough people together to play a game. -Paul

[2008-05-07 17:26:38] - :-P  ~a

[2008-05-07 17:25:27] - a: I rounded two two decimal places on all my calcs.  Sorry. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 16:09:17] - Xpovos: Right, it's either 2 extra half payments or 1 extra full payment. I'm not sure where 1.5 comes from. -Paul

[2008-05-07 16:07:50] - xpovos:  there are 365.256366 days per year.  ~a

[2008-05-07 16:06:14] - gurkie:  every two weeks = 26.  every month = 12.  do you mean twice a month?  ~a

[2008-05-07 16:02:54] - Correction: It's two extra payments that equal slightly more than one extra monthly payment each year. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 16:02:03] - It's closer to two. 365.25 days per year divided by 7 days per week ->  52.18 weeks per year.  Divide by two weeks per payment -> 26.09.  Divide by two again because each two week payment is half the size of a monthly payment (assumed) -> 13.04.  Compare with 12 payments for monthly. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 15:25:06] - Gurkie: Isn't that just one extra payment, or am I misunderstanding what you are saying? -Paul

[2008-05-07 14:46:11] - aba: cool to know on how much it decreases it... I do 1.5 extra payments a year by making payments every 2 weeks instead of once a month. I knew it was supposed to decrease when I would pay it off by a fair amount but not by how much. ~gurkie

[2008-05-07 14:28:13] - a: True, but what am I going to withdraw from my "savings account" for? I'm not going to put all my spare money into my mortgage. In fact, I just put $2k back into my scottrade account to try to make back some of my losses from earlier in the year. -Paul

[2008-05-07 13:58:25] - paul:  savings accounts you can withdraw from.  it's closer to a 30 year cd (without early withdrawal).  when you compare it to other long term cds, the yield isn't even really that high.  ~a

[2008-05-07 13:46:29] - a: I'm not planning on paying off my mortgage early to get rich, I see it more like a high yield savings account. :-) -Paul

[2008-05-07 13:45:46] - a: True, but you also never know when the stock market is going to tank like it did the past year and you'll end up losing money. -Paul

[2008-05-07 13:21:26] - paul:  depending on your rate and everything, paying down the mortgage might not be to your benefit.  if your rate is 6%, and in 10 years the rate is 12% (and cd's are say 10%), then you'll wish you had put the extra money into some other investment.  i.e. you can't un-pay-down your mortgage.  ~a

[2008-05-07 12:09:51] - aba: I am well acquainted with that extra mortgage payment fact. I just made my first mortgage payment and I am planning on putting an extra couple of hundred dollars towards the principle each month. -Paul

[2008-05-07 11:55:12] - mig:  ewww.  that sounds crappy.  is there a secondary form of authentication?  or is a network connection required?  ~a

[2008-05-07 11:49:26] - to be honest, for most gamers i think this is a really a non-issue because what pc gamer isn't connect 24/7 to the internet these days, but it could get very annoying if your net connection is down (fuck you cox) and it happens to want to check, or you want to play on a laptop or something like that. - mig

[2008-05-07 11:46:30] - http://games.slashdot.org/games/08/05/07/1523242.shtml spore and mass effect will require internet access to play despite being single player games. - mig

[2008-05-07 11:31:09] - aba:  the economy of 2029 thanks you.  the economy of 2009 doesn't give a fuck :-P  ~a

[2008-05-07 11:23:27] - whenever i make a student loan payment (or a car payment when i had it), i round up to the nearest hundred dollar amount and apply the extra to the principal.  i don't end up missing the money in my day-to-day life, but it let me pay off my car long before i was supposed to.  -  aba

[2008-05-07 11:18:45] - gurkie: my debt is student loan debt too.  also, small amounts of extra money can dramatically help your long-term debt.  1 extra mortgage payment a year turns a 30 year fixed mortgage into 21 years.  -  aba

[2008-05-07 11:08:55] - a: Even better, they could mail us gift cards. :-) -Paul

[2008-05-07 10:57:37] - heh, they won't let you direct deposit your economic stimulus check (which prevents people from sending it directly to savings).  if they could feasibly mail us cash, they probably would.  ~a

[2008-05-07 10:45:05] - xpovos:  paying down debt helps the long term economy.  buying something retail helps the short term economy.  ~a

[2008-05-07 10:27:16] - I also track our debt in two categories, "good" and "bad".  Good debt is things like the student loan debt where the interest is tax deductable, even if we don't itemize or my car loan which is asset-backed and low-fixed rate.  Mortgage would also go here.  Bad debt is unsecured/high interest. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 10:25:17] - gurkie: No, and no, I wouldn't expect $600 on a mortgage would do a whole lot.  Katie and I are renting.  Multiple reasons, but, ironically one of the biggest is debt.  She had to take out massive student loans.  Hurrah for private-school college education at one of the most expensive per-year universities in the country. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 10:20:41] - Xpovos: did you and Katie buy a place? Cause I dont think of mortgage debt as being a sad thing...  Hmm somehow I doubt putting the stimulus package towards my mortgage would do much in terms of paying down debt... ~Gurkie

[2008-05-07 09:44:41] - Xpovos: I'm strangely satisfied about the debt I have. Means I don't have to stress over saving money for something and it gives me a goal to strive towards: paying off my debt. -Paul

[2008-05-07 08:56:21] - The sad part, to me, is that so many of us have debt to pay down. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 08:55:58] - a: I honestly don't see paying down debt as hurting the economy.  It's not direct spending, but it's funding previous spending, and eliminating a major hang on why most people can't spend more.  I know my quality of life is artificially deflated by the level of debt we're carrying.  As we pay it off, we'll progress to spending more. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-07 02:31:58] - sam: pay down debt.  :)  -  aba

[2008-05-06 17:38:45] - paul & xpovos:  yay.  we're hurting the economy!  ~a

[2008-05-06 17:05:31] - Sam: Haven't got mine yet since I didn't have my refund direct deposited. I'll probably use mine to make an extra payment on the principle of my place. -Paul

[2008-05-06 16:06:58] - sam: Katie got hers.  We're paying down debt too. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-06 15:39:54] - /rant

[2008-05-06 15:39:50] - you notice how they work "george w. bush" into the FIRST LINE of the notice that they mail every tax paying citizen.  ~a

[2008-05-06 15:38:56] - here is your money back!  thanks for the zero interest loan!  suckers.  ~a

[2008-05-06 15:38:18] - seriously though, i think the idea of an economic stimulus package is retarded.  ~a

[2008-05-06 14:35:33] - sam:  pay down debt!  :-P  ~a

[2008-05-06 14:34:47] - have you guys received the economic stimulus payment from the gov yet? if so, what are you guys planning to spend it on? -sam

[2008-05-06 13:56:33] - wtf is a spherical computer?

[2008-05-06 10:25:51] - a:  that's pretty nifty!  -  aba

[2008-05-05 21:36:08] - aba:  i downloaded that homer.css thing.  it produced these:  http://aporter.org/tmp/0.html  http://aporter.org/tmp/1.html  ~a

[2008-05-05 19:33:21] - a: You don't have to be, just let me know if you're going to do otherwise.  Katie has a hair-cutting appointment @1715.  Doors to 9:30 open at 1930.  We plan on eating an earlish dinner at Chammp's and then on to the club.  I'll send you an e-mail so that I make sure you've got our cell phone numbers. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-05 19:30:05] - xpovos:  so to be clear, i have to be at pentagon city metro station wednesday, at what time?  ~a

[2008-05-05 19:26:02] - a: We paid $15.  I'll eat the ticketmaster service fee. :-) -- Xpovos

[2008-05-05 19:23:48] - To make it easier, we'll be at Pentagon Row next to the Pentagon City metro stop  that early evening before the concert for various activities, including dinner, so all the claimant of the ticket needs to do is get to the Pentagon City metro station, I'll drive back into D.C. to park near the 9:30 club, and drop claimant back off at a metro, or other convenient location.

[2008-05-05 19:23:31] - xpovos:  me.  price?  ~a

[2008-05-05 19:22:26] - All: I purchased an extra ticket for the Apocalyptica concert Wednesday, May 7, at the 9:30 club because I was told my sister-in-law might be in town and want to go.  She is not goigng to be in town.  Rather than let the ticket go to waste or some stranger, I figured I'd offer it here to anyone interested. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-05 15:21:05] - it's my own personal opinion that ipc should not be sent over loopback, but yes that's what it's often used for in microsoftland.  ~a

[2008-05-05 15:12:06] - a: yeah, it's a bit strange.  it seems like network traffic directed to the loopback device is the last thing you'd want accidentally sent over external lines.  isn't loopback used for IPC in some systems, or have my years of booze and rock n' roll addled my memory? - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:58:54] - now i'm wondering why I'M not using DynamicForward.  ~a

[2008-05-05 13:56:58] - pierce:  your loopback device is just like any other device.  your kernel can do whatever it wants with those packets.  i know that doesn't answer your question but i really don't know why it's doing what it's doing.  ~a

[2008-05-05 13:55:20] - pierce:  it depends on what your requirements are.  i'm using ssh (port forwarding) + apache and it works pretty because it's simple.  if you have more serious requirements, ssh also has general SOCKS5 forwarding ("DynamicForward" in ssh config).  ~a

[2008-05-05 13:49:12] - I'm still curious if anyone has a theory as to why that's happening though.  127.0.0.1 should just be the loopback device, and shouldn't go through any other connection, right? - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:48:11] - but remote desktop is not a factor in the issue I'm seeing.  I'll try redirecting to 0.0.0.0 instead and see if that works.  Thanks, a. - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:47:09] - the vpn is just set up within the "Network Connections" tool, like any LAN connection would be.  Once it's connected and I'm on my company's internal network, I use remote desktop to get to my development system. - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:36:29] - when you say windows xp networking, do you mean remote desktop? - mig

[2008-05-05 13:34:52] - a: (in response to "something else") - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:34:08] - a: such as? - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:34:05] - i'd also suggest redirecting ad.doubleclick to 0.0.0.0 instead of localhost.  i've heard that sometimes 0.0.0.0 doesn't work, but i haven't found a case where it doesn't.  ~a

[2008-05-05 13:32:54] - have you considered setting up a vpn through something else?  ~a

[2008-05-05 13:25:43] - hmmm... upon further investigation, it appears to trigger when I try to open a connection to the local host, which happens pretty frequently since I redirect ad.doubleclick.net there.  any idea why that might be happening? - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:20:32] - it's not set as the "default" connection, before you ask. - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:20:19] - two questions: how do I get this to stop happening, and is there any chance that the URL or IP I was trying to access would have been transmitted to the VPN servers even if I didn't authenticate? - pierce

[2008-05-05 13:19:28] - hey, I have a VPN connection set up through windows XP networking.  sometimes, when I'm disconnected from the VPN and just browsing the web, the "Connect" dialog will pop up as if it thought it needed to go through it for whatever I was accessing... - pierce

[2008-05-05 12:01:40] - paul:  when you update your drivers license, you can request that they also update your voter registration.  ~a

[2008-05-05 10:40:25] - I just realized that my voting card still says that I live in Reston. I wonder if I need to change that. -Paul

[2008-05-05 10:04:19] - I can't vote for him, but probably most of you could.  If he was a candidate of your flavor. http://www.amit08.com/ -- Xpovos

[2008-05-04 14:00:20] - wow, nixon died when we were in middle school?  i wonder why i forgot that.  ~a

[2008-05-04 12:51:05] - paul:  nevermind, i found it.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_United_States_Presidents  -  aba

[2008-05-04 12:47:16] - paul:  where are you getting the info that truman is considered to be one of our better presidents?  -  aba

[2008-05-03 23:56:37] - xpovos:  it's a skin for firefox.  . . . and a few miscellaneous changes.  if you look at the bottom right of the image, you can see the icons for my other firefox plugins.  ~a

[2008-05-03 21:59:21] - I imagine Herbert Hoover was not particularly well liked either, but that was probably more -after- he was out of office than when he was in... -- Xpovos

[2008-05-03 21:58:28] - a: That image has me confused.  A true WTF moment if you will.  Did you have Firefox running beside IE, or is that just a really fucked up glitch? -- Xpovos

[2008-05-02 18:36:48] - paul:  the key word is "can"  ~a

[2008-05-02 17:47:30] - aba: Interesting that Harry Truman was included on the list of presidents with high disapproval ratings at the time and yet now I believe he is considered one of our better presidents. Just goes to show how opinions can change over time. -Paul

[2008-05-02 17:40:55] - http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/01/bush.poll/index.html      i lol'd.  -  aba

[2008-05-02 15:39:58] - well intel and dave were right about the number of transistors.  but i don't think anybody could have guessed that we would have been stuck at 3ghz for so long.  ~a

[2008-05-02 15:09:41] - bahaha:  msgboard from 2001 "intel creates smaller transistor and expects to fit 1 billion in cpus come 2007 and reach a clockspeed of 20 GHz -dave"  ~a

[2008-05-02 14:45:11] - i also saw the email.  ~a

[2008-05-02 14:44:28] - paul:  yes.  ~a

[2008-05-02 14:44:01] - aaron:  reston and fair lakes are only five minutes apart!  ~a

[2008-05-02 14:42:30] - a: Did you see what Aaron posted? We're going to see the 7:50pm showing tonight at Cinema De Lux. -Paul

[2008-05-02 14:42:08] - Aaron: Yeah, that was the plan. Vinnie and Amy should be there too. -Paul

[2008-05-02 14:34:03] - paul: oh right you live near me!! i don't have to try and do sneaky things to avoid reston town center anymore - aaron

[2008-05-02 14:33:28] - paul: cinema de lux@7:50 for harold and kumar? - aaron

[2008-05-02 14:29:20] - man i love firefox!  . . . i mean internet explorer.  ~a

[2008-05-02 14:08:56] - i guess technically you get rewarded for running over people if they are an objective of a mission you're on, but usually it's easier to just walk out and shoot them. - mig

[2008-05-02 14:06:47] - gurkie:  driving drunk in that game isn't a cool challenge, it's annoying.  Actually trying to control your character while drunk as a whole is annoying.  I suppose it can be humorous at times, though. - mig

[2008-05-02 14:04:57] - gurkie:  you don't get points for running over people, actually bowling over people like a maniac will get you either arrested or killed very quickly, which usually isn't a reward. - mig

[2008-05-02 13:56:24] - aaron:  didn't you watch the southpark movie?  in movies, horrific, deplorable violence is okay, as long as people don't say any naughty words.  ~a

[2008-05-02 13:42:53] - it's like saying pulp fiction is inappropriate for minors because of the foul language. - aaron

[2008-05-02 13:33:46] - gurkie: no it doesn't. and the whole game is a challenge, it makes killing prostitutes and shooting down police helicopters and shooting people with a sniper rifle seem like a cool challenge too - aaron

[2008-05-02 13:08:11] - gurkie:  even if it doesn't, running people over is enjoyable in its own right.  ~a

[2008-05-02 13:03:34] - paul: i think that it makes drunk driving seem like a cool challenge, something thats fun that should be mastered rather than something to be avoided. Correct me if I am wrong but doesnt it also give you points for running people over? ~gurkie

[2008-05-02 12:37:00] - mig: not to mention kind of offensive to victims of gun violence. they found like, one of the least harmful things you can do in the game to complain about! - aaron

[2008-05-02 12:35:29] - kaleb: harold and kumar tonite!!! - aaron

[2008-05-02 12:32:21] - paul:  and yeah you can actually get the cops chasing you if they see you driving drunk, apparently. - mig

[2008-05-02 12:31:45] - paul:  it's really just attention-whoring.  I guess there might be some reason to at least from them to be a little irritated but calling saying the game is an affront to all victims of drunk driving is just absurd. - mig

[2008-05-02 12:28:45] - paul:  me.  ~a

[2008-05-02 12:27:29] - aaron:  i think it maybe includes sending the data to the client in that number.  i wonder how i can extract that out.  ~a

[2008-05-02 12:06:39] - Paul: Interested, yes.  But I think Katie is going to insist that she and I go see Forbidden Kingdom instead. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-02 11:12:13] - If anybody is interested in seeing Harold and Kumar 2 tonight, let me know. -Paul

[2008-05-02 10:55:12] - mig: I mean, it's not like the game even glorifies drunk driving, right? Doesn't it just make it much harder for you to drive? -Paul

[2008-05-02 10:54:43] - mig: I sometimes wonder if they're truly outraged by these things or if they just feel like they are obligated to protest anything involving drunk driving because of their name. -Paul

[2008-05-02 10:18:55] - I dunno, I can see where MADD would have legitimate issue with the game... ~gurkie

[2008-05-02 10:09:57] - a:  it is silly. - mig

[2008-05-02 09:10:22] - a: On the face of it, I suppose it does seem a little suspicious, especially considering how she threatened to name names of powerful people. -Paul

[2008-05-01 17:43:21] - mig:  "MADD is also calling on publisher Take-Two Interactive and developer Rockstar Games to consider stopping distribution of the game - which analysts expect to sell 9 million copies and make over $400 million at launch - 'out of respect for the millions of victims/survivors of drunk driving.'"  to me, it seems like a very silly suggestion.  ~a

[2008-05-01 16:48:39] - aaron:  wtf?  :-P  ~a

[2008-05-01 16:22:45] - Aaron: Aw... you sometimes ditch us? :'( -Paul

[2008-05-01 16:21:26] - miguel: being drunk in the game is so fun! the other day, i was out with little jacob, and i just tumbled off a curb like a falling tree. i screamed all the way down and then fell on my face. then little jacob fell too, it was so funny looking. - aaron

[2008-05-01 15:09:25] - vinnie:  yeah.  let's call it off; i was on the fence too.  i showed up for work very late today.  ~a

[2008-05-01 15:02:34] - a: Aaron just called and told me he's not going to DDR either. I was on the fence about whether to go since I've got so much work here today. should we just call it off this week? - vinnie

[2008-05-01 14:25:36] - aaron: No DDR for me today. Need to go to the store and DMV and stuff. - Kaleb

[2008-05-01 14:01:43] - xpovos:  yeah.  i'm seeing 300s now too.  weird.  ~a

[2008-05-01 13:56:33] - a: <!--328-->  But honestly, I haven't noticed a problem myself. -- Xpovos

[2008-05-01 13:07:14] - sam: trust me lots of guys walk ahead of you by a few steps, even on dates... ~gurkie

[2008-05-01 12:54:17] - sam:  i've been having a few hiccups on the ps3 version.  nothing terribly major though. - mig

[2008-05-01 12:42:29] - aaron:  it seems pretty slow.  but i don't think it's the message board, i think it's the comcast.  if you view source on the page, the last comment:  (for example)  <!--47-->  is how long it took for the page to render.  47ms is pretty slow in some contexts, but on a site with such little traffic as this one and on this 1999 hardware, 47ms is more than quick enough.  ~a

[2008-05-01 12:24:04] - sam: haha I try - vinnie

[2008-05-01 11:37:48] - vinnie: yeah, but when you are amy are walking together, you walk side by side, right? -sam

[2008-05-01 11:25:34] - sam: I often walk a few steps ahead of people in real life. it is awkward! :) - vinnie

[2008-05-01 10:29:46] - oops i meant i had NO technical issues with xbox360 version of GTA4 -sam

[2008-05-01 10:28:43] - i thought the melee fighting scheme was well done. you can now block and counter attack. i'v yet to use guns yet though. hopefully the next missions will be more ingaging and more exciting... -sam

[2008-05-01 10:28:35] - even the date mission where you take a woman on a date to a bowling alley.  they could have put more interesting dialogues and could have made it so that you and the date are actually walking side by side when walking... it seemed like i was walking a few stepps ahead of the woman all the time.  it seemed very awkward.... -sam

[2008-05-01 10:28:01] - I played GTA4 for xbox360 for about 2 hours and had to technical issues. no freezing, no hiccups, no lags... it was was smooth and seemless.  i felt like the game story moved very slowly.  -sam

[2008-05-01 10:07:34] - is the message board really slow today? - aaron

[2008-05-01 09:09:35] - a: if you were getting paid for this, i'd suggest the following. Apply a bayesian filter to incoming messages to figure out if they "look like spam". If they look like spam, and if the user hasn't posted before, notify the user and give them a once-per-IP captcha - aaron

[2008-04-30 15:54:14] - vinnie:  like paul said, you'd only need to do it once per ip (or, alternatively, once per sign-name).  mostly i'm just musing though, the spam problem isn't a big enough problem *yet*  ~a

[2008-04-30 15:25:16] - xpovos:  that would probably work.  that's what i meant by "filtering"  ~a

[2008-04-30 15:24:59] - paul:  yeah, i know.  ~a

[2008-04-30 15:01:14] - a: Well, I assumed you would only do it when getting hits from IPs you hadn't seen before. -Paul

[2008-04-30 15:00:49] - a: You could do algorithmic content filtering.  Typically spammers will want to post links.  Restrict link postings to also include a signature. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-30 14:57:52] - vinnie: No access to gmail at work.  I called Game Parlor.  They moved the release event, it apparently conflicted with something.  It is next Saturday, not this.  5/10. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-30 14:55:22] - a: you're talking about the mboard, right? as long as you're gonna add the image test thing, you may as well just do registration instead. :( I realize you said you want to keep it open, but I'd greatly prefer one-time registration to entering image letters every time - vinnie

[2008-04-30 14:34:55] - paul:  your idea is a good one.  however, it's a sort of authentication that i only want to use as a last resort.  wouldn't you be annoyed by it?  ~a

[2008-04-30 13:58:55] - mig: Yeah, but that one is yours and is likely going to go in the living room. I just want a nice tv setup for the basement to go along with the sound system I am trying to arrange. -Paul

[2008-04-30 13:50:13] - paul:  well another TV will be arriving at your place on saturday... - mig

[2008-04-30 13:45:13] - Arg... the more I I do research for my home theater and the more I hear about new video games, the more annoyed I get that my TV has lag. I want a new TV but it's ridiculous to do so when I have a perfectly good one already. :-( -Paul

[2008-04-30 13:42:40] - mig: Hahaha. We just turned on subtitles. It's better that way anyhow, as you get translations for stuff said in other languages. - Kaleb

[2008-04-30 13:36:56] - aaron: I actually hadn't kept up with any sequence breaking advancements in other Metroid games since I played through Zero Mission. You may be right about Super Metroid, but I'll have to check it out. Let me know if you find any good videos. - Kaleb

[2008-04-30 13:34:09] - Also GTA4's aiming is pretty good. The cover system is a little clumsy. Switching weapons is awkward at first but they've made a lot of improvements, like hotkeys to go to your pistol, automatics, shotgun, or thrown weapons... so you don't have to keep hitting "next weapon" over and over - aaron

[2008-04-30 13:33:16] - mig: The first thing I did after my first mission was turn on subtitles, and turn on "reverse look". Little jacob is supposed to be a little incomprehensible though - Aaron

[2008-04-30 13:23:56] - a: Couldn't you just ask new IPs to do one of those tests where you display an image and ask what letters are in it? -Paul

[2008-04-30 12:46:55] - xpovos:  ok so you don't have any suggestions.  i guess i'll table any decisions until things get worse.  i'll probably look deeper into blacklists and filtering if and when i worry about this again.  ~a

[2008-04-30 12:18:25] - xpovos: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third-person_shooter not saying you're really wrong in calling it that, just most people refer to it as third person view.  When most people say first person they usually refer to FPS type games. - mig

[2008-04-30 12:09:19] - mig: No, first person.  The fact that I can see my own back does not make it third person.  3D gaming in general just isn't my cup of tea, though. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-30 12:08:22] - a: From my standpoint, if requiring authentication is out, then spam is inevitable.  Timely deletion is your best weapon.  I know that's unacceptable though. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-30 11:40:59] - aaron/kaleb:  do any of you understand what little jacob is saying half the time? - mig

[2008-04-30 11:19:02] - *an endless source.  ~a

[2008-04-30 11:04:33] - mig:  don't forget that none of the spammers are spamming from their own machines.  it's always coming from a new member of and endless source of botnet endpoints.  ~a

[2008-04-30 11:03:58] - mig:  that doesn't work at all.  each new post comes from a different ip.  ~a

[2008-04-30 10:47:53] - a: for xbox360 i think it's a different issue.  i heard it freezes often on some xbox360s. -sam

[2008-04-30 10:35:29] - flag offending ips as spam and don't let them post? - mig

[2008-04-30 10:31:03] - aaron/kaleb: i thought there was a street race out front of the house last night, then i realized it was you guys.... ~gurkie

[2008-04-30 10:28:19] - . . . i guess i could check dns blacklists.  apparently the most recent asshole showed up on some blacklists (but i don't see him on some of the more notable ones).  ~a

[2008-04-30 10:23:07] - so you libertarians out there, how do i go about preventing spam on an open web-site without involving the law or authentication?  i could add a usage policy that specifically forbids spam, but the spammers would neither read it nor obey it.  ~a

[2008-04-30 10:22:16] - aaron: yeah, every item you get in any of the Metroids - missile, super missile, beam, suits - all add to your percentage. a 9% run is pretty insane when you think about it. I think in super metroid the lowest run that people have found is like 15% - vinnie

[2008-04-30 10:18:31] - god, i fucking hate spam.  ~a

[2008-04-30 10:02:46] - a:  you get to play a bowling mini-game early on.  it's not very good. - mig

[2008-04-30 09:57:19] - xpovos:  you mean third person view, don't you? - mig

[2008-04-30 09:56:28] - there's a slight screen jerk when a big radio segment loads up, but other than that I have not had any issues playing. - mig

[2008-04-30 09:37:41] - xpovos: i got it last night. i'll play it today and will let you know how it is. -sam

[2008-04-30 08:42:25] - For me, believe it or not, one of the biggest turn-offs was the First Person perspective.  I have a hard time doing FPP games. GTA2 was top down.  Very comfortable.  But if the game is good and well designed I can do FPP.  If anyone gets GTA4, let me know what you think, it looks like they've tweaked it pretty well from what I've read in reviews. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-30 08:40:50] - Spam: Woo! Yummy spam! -- Xpovos

[2008-04-30 00:04:19] - according to your link it's affecting the xbox360 too.  ~a

[2008-04-29 23:57:10] - it seems like the launch 60gb PS3 is having issues with GTA4... -sam

[2008-04-29 23:52:01] - GTA4 freezing issue on PS3 http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=gta&thread.id=370613&view=by_date_ascending&page=1 -sam

[2008-04-29 23:48:55] - Forums aflame over GTA4 freezing http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/grandtheftauto4/news_6190136.html -sam

[2008-04-29 23:46:31] - paul: IGN isn't the only reviewer that gave a perfect score. so many other reviewers gave it a perfect score. check this out http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/933037.asp -sam

[2008-04-29 23:45:13] - a: about the installation issue for the PS3 version of gta4, i'm not sure it's a wide spread issue or a just a rare case.  i'm guessing it was fine on the reviewers' PS3. -sam

[2008-04-29 21:46:15] - bowling?  ~a

[2008-04-29 21:17:25] - i don't like the bowling game so much.  the social aspect of the game seems very interesting though. - mig

[2008-04-29 21:05:35] - gta4 is looking really, really, good. - mig

[2008-04-29 19:06:44] - a: the minigames were OK, I played them a little. I think Bully had better minigames but I got tired of it faster. It's mostly the AI and universe hugeness I think - aaron

[2008-04-29 19:05:43] - sentences like "i fell off that cliff, but it's a good thing i was in a tractor trailer!" and "phew, I found a bicycle. now the truck can't run me over" should not be semantically sound in any universe - aaron

[2008-04-29 19:04:34] - aaron:  really?  you liked it because it was a sandbox like game and all the minigames, right?  ~a

[2008-04-29 19:03:51] - a: imho the unpredictable AI and vastness of the universe make it fun but the gameplay is broken to the point of being hilarious. - aaron

[2008-04-29 19:01:44] - a: Yeah, I played a ton of GTA3SA so i guess i must have liked it huh :) though i still feel like it's kind of a stupid game, I don't think I like it for the reasons I'm supposed to - aaron

[2008-04-29 18:17:39] - a: Wow, no kidding. IGN gave it a 10. I'm shocked. I might even consider buying it now. -Paul

[2008-04-29 18:06:42] - aaron:  i thought you liked gta3sa.  ~a

[2008-04-29 17:08:12] - kaleb: Couldn't you technically beat Super Metroid without getting any items except for the initial missile pack? Or are you talking about the boss-type items too (like the freeze beam and such) - aaron

[2008-04-29 17:06:34] - In GTA1 you died in one bullet so it was not an easy game :) - aaron

[2008-04-29 17:06:07] - The only thing they've kept consistent from the original game is that it's incredibly easy to die in stupid ways during a mission, and that's an integral aspect of the gameplay. Unlike the original GTA though, you don't have to complete 6-7 missions in a row without dying to get anywhere - aaron

[2008-04-29 17:05:20] - vinnie: Metroid Zero Mission has the most sequence breaking in the series. If you like the game enough, you could try going again for a 9% item run. I've done it and it's very challenging. - Kaleb

[2008-04-29 17:03:50] - a: Aaron's picking up GTA4 for 360 tonight. The difference between the PS3 and 360 versions are negligible (biggest being enhanced loading times for PS3 due to hard disk usage). Furthermore, downloadable content for 360 has already been confirmed, where as it hasn't been for PS3. - Kaleb

[2008-04-29 17:02:59] - xpovos: I bought GTA2 and skipped GTA3 also... After GTA2, GTA3 looked like just another FPS, it was very sad to see it lose so much personality - aaron

[2008-04-29 16:20:00] - doesnt it seem like the game should be out for more than a day before its considered the best game out there? or is that just me and not liking (video) games that much... ~gurkie

[2008-04-29 16:01:27] - sam:  with those issues, why would all the rating sites give it such crazy over the top ratings?  ~a

[2008-04-29 15:15:55] - a: GTA2 (1999) -- Xpovos

[2008-04-29 15:09:37] - a: i think ps3 is the cheapest blu-ray player out there, so i would get it.  oh, yeah, you can also play games on it :-) -sam

[2008-04-29 15:00:59] - a: i heard the ps3 version of the gta4 has some issue when installing to the hard drive (yes, apparently, the ps3 version makes you install the game to the hard drive).  -sam

[2008-04-29 14:57:15] - should i buy a ps3?  i don't really buy or play games that often but i might use it for other things.  ~a

[2008-04-29 14:56:25] - sam:  encryption is always lame when it technically and legally prevents me from exercising fair use.  ~a

[2008-04-29 14:54:24] - xpovos:  when you say #2, are you referring to GTA3 VC (the second gta3 in 2002)?  or GTA2 (in 1999)?  ~a

[2008-04-29 14:49:15] - a: i already have xbox360, so i am getting the xbox360 version of gta4. I'm planning to get it tonight at the microcenter.  -sam

[2008-04-29 14:48:47] - a: Oh, obviously, it would be for the Xbox 360.  I don't have a PS3. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-29 14:48:30] - a: I played some GTA in college.  I think it was #2.  It was mindless fun for about 2 hours.  I never got/played 3.  Don't feel compelled to get 4.  Though with it getting stellar reviews, I may look into it deeper, still expecting not to purchase. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-29 14:47:27] - a: I think the cable box will encrypt the external hard drive, i know it encrypts the internal hard drive that's already there. -sam

[2008-04-29 14:34:42] - gurkie: Personally, I thought the 'older and grizzlier' part was the more disturbing.  But certainly the whole of the statement was unpalatable.  -- Xpovos

[2008-04-29 14:27:20] - xpovos: there are so many things wrong with the concept of "sharing" a corpse.... ~gurkie

[2008-04-29 14:26:39] - . . . omg, gta 4 has the highest rating of any game ever on a whole bunch of game rating sites.  supposedly the ps3 version is a little better than the xbox360 version.  is anybody else buying the game?  and if so, for which system?  ~a

[2008-04-29 14:20:31] - I dunno, he still might end up having to share... I guess it depends on how and when she dies. The older and the grizzlier the less likely a need to share, but also perhaps less interest even from Paul. -- X

[2008-04-29 13:32:54] - paul: and when she is least likely to be taken... ~gurkie

[2008-04-29 13:19:25] - Gurkie: That's when the least amount of resistance will be put up? -Paul

[2008-04-29 13:08:13] - paul: in fact after dead before decomposed is probably your best chance.... ~gurkie

[2008-04-29 12:37:11] - Paul: There's always a chance until she's <strike>dead</strike> decomposed. -- Xpovos

[2008-04-29 10:30:25] - Gurkie: So you're saying there's a chance? -Paul

[2008-04-29 08:34:53] - kaleb: I'm playing through Metroid Zero Mission and I found one of your images on Gamefaqs. :D too bad I'm not sequence breaking - vinnie

[2008-04-28 11:10:45] - i thought of a good name portmanteau:  the person who left early from dewey's move-in:  meguel.  ~a

[2008-04-28 11:00:08] - paul: live the dream!!! - vinnie

[2008-04-28 10:18:57] - paul: ur girl (Emma/Hermione) turned 18 and is dating a 25 year old... Thought you should know ~Gurkie

[2008-04-28 09:45:15] - aaron: a few days ago, I thought of celery clinton - vinnie

[2008-04-27 22:38:11] - vinnie: i would have also accepted dennis kuspinach - aaron

[2008-04-26 13:11:52] - or bored enough?  ~a

[2008-04-25 09:28:46] - if you type your own message into the CNN URL, it briefly shows you the shirt with your message before redirecting you. seems like there should be some way to get around that. not that I am smart enough or willing enough to figure it out - vinnie

[2008-04-24 17:03:12] - aaron:  bahaha.  yeah, it could get tasteless and sick.  and branding your companies logo on tasteless products is probably not something you should strive for.  ~a

[2008-04-24 17:01:36] - my dad just got an external hard drive expansion.  i didn't even know they existed.  sam, do they encrypt the content stored on the external drives.  i have to assume they do, but that would be quite open of them otherwise.  ~a

[2008-04-24 15:57:58] - do you know if there is a limit to how much external hard drive storage expansion a COX DVR Scientific Atlantic 8300HD supports? -sam

[2008-04-24 15:27:22] - pointless at best - aaron

[2008-04-24 14:34:28] - questionable because most of the headlines would make pointless t-shirts?  ~a
